Samenvatting (Dutch Summary) De onderzoeksliteratuur rond het thema â€Banking†documenteert de verschillende rollen van banken in financiele systemen. Banken zijn in de eerste plaats “voorzieners van liquiditeitâ€, zoals aangetoond wordt in het baanbrekend werk van Diamon en Dybvig (1983). Ze zijn namelijk vooral belangrijk voor kleine en middelgrote ondernemingen (KMO’s) en vormen voor deze ondernemingen de belangrijkste bron van externe financiering. Banken zijn daardoor ook essentieel voor het vlot functioneren en de groei van een economie.
