This official feed from the Google Workspace team provides essential information about new features and improvements for Google Workspace customers.

What’s changing

Users have been able to use Gemini in the side panel of Google Drive to summarize one or multiple documents, interact with PDFs, have focused conversations about a specific Drive folder, create files and folders, and more. However, until now, this functionality was text-based only and did not account for images saved in your Drive.

Similar to the recent video announcement, we’re happy to announce that Gemini can now answer questions or give you summaries about images in Drive. Here are some examples of what you can ask Gemini to:

  • Summarize this image
  • Extract text from this image
  • Extract information from this receipt/invoice into a table
  • Generate alternate text for this image
  • Write a story about this image

Gemini is extracting information from this receipt into a table

This feature is currently available in English only and works best for:

What’s changing

For those who prefer to listen to document content, we’re excited to introduce the ability to create audio versions of your documents using Gemini in Google Docs.

Whether you want to hear your content out loud, absorb information better while reading, or help catch errors in your writing, audio versions of your documents provide you with clear, natural-sounding voices that read your documents aloud. You also have the option to customize your audio experience with a variety of voices and playback speeds to match your personal preferences.

This new feature includes capabilities for both authors and readers to listen to documents. More specifically:

Readers can access the Listen to this tab option, available in the Tools > Audio menu, to quickly listen to the contents of the current tab.

Authors can add Audio buttons, available in the Insert > Audio buttons menu, which inserts a play button directly into documents so readers can easily listen to the current tab with a single click. Once added to the document, authors can change the label, color, and size of the button.

What’s changing

You can currently use Gemini in Google Chat to summarize unread conversations in the Chat home view and to summarize files shared in conversations. To build upon this, we’re adding the ability to catch up on unread messages in a direct message, group conversation, or space.

With this launch, when opening a space or group direct message with a significant number of unread messages, you’ll see a card in the conversation pane summarizing recent discussions. When there are a smaller number of unread messages, you can l manually generate a summary by clicking / tapping on the summarize button.

This new feature will help you more easily catch up on unread messages within conversations so you can quickly get up to speed and respond as needed.

Initially, this will be available for users on the web. The feature will launch on mobile at a later date.

What’s changing

Building upon generative image capabilities across Google Workspace, we’re excited to introduce two AI image editing features in Google Slides and Google Vids.

To expand on the ability to edit your images, we’re adding the options to modify the background of your image beyond removing the background. Simply select your image, and click on the ‘Generate an image’ icon in the side panel, select ‘Edit’ and select "Replace background." and type in a prompt, such as ‘Minimalist product shot in studio’ and select ‘Create’. This new feature can be useful in numerous scenarios, for example:
  • Contextualize products: Take a standard product photo (e.g., a chair on a plain background) and instantly place it in a variety of realistic settings like a modern living room, a cozy café, or an outdoor patio to help customers visualize it.
  • Company headshots/team photos: Easily remove distracting backgrounds from employee photos and replace them with a professional, unified backdrop for internal and external presentations (e.g., "Meet the Team" slides, company profiles).
  • Tailored client presentations: Quickly adapt presentation visuals to resonate with specific clients by changing backgrounds to reflect their industry, location, or company culture. For example, show a software solution being used in a specific office environment or industry setting.
  • Visually engaging training materials: Create more appealing training slides by replacing generic backgrounds with relevant imagery that helps illustrate concepts (e.g., a customer service representative in a dynamic call center environment).

Replacing the background of an image in Vids

Gemini can also now help intelligently expand the background of your images, so you can seamlessly resize and reframe visuals without distortion or compromising quality. For example, if you have a smaller image of an object in your Slides presentation and you’d like to make it bigger to increase its impact, simply open the expand feature using “Generate an image” in the side panel of Slides or the sidebar. From there, you select your desired aspect ratio and can browse different image options to preview before inserting one into your presentation.

Why you’d use it

Editing images with Gemini helps those without design skills meet their imagery needs, and unlocks a new level of flexibility and professionalism for Vids and Slides presentations.

What’s changing

Last year, we introduced Gemini LTI™, an AI-powered assistant that can integrate into third party Learning Management Systems (LMS). Gemini LTI™ helps enhance the educational experience for both educators and students by providing AI-driven tools and features powered by Gemini within their LMS environment, such as Canvas by Instructure and PowerSchool Schoology Learning.

Today, we’re excited to announce that NotebookLM is now integrated with Gemini LTI™. As a result, educators can create Notebooks per week/topic and publish them within Gemini LTI. These Notebooks can include relevant teaching materials and act as an additional resource for students to use while learning. In the coming weeks, Gems will also be integrated with Gemini LTI™.

For example, educators can:
  • Create content-grounded Notebooks that help define their curriculum and empower students to learn at their own pace.
  • Create Gems for FAQs that help students quickly find answers to common questions about assignments, and more (coming soon).

For example, students can:
  • Learn on-the-go by creating a podcast-like Audio Overview of their course material with NotebookLM
  • Get in-the-moment assistance with real-time coaching using Gems (coming soon).

What’s changing

Building upon our recent announcements of using Gemini in Google Forms to summarize form responses and quickly create a new form, we’re introducing an additional AI-powered feature that can help save you time.

Starting today, Gemini can use existing form content to suggest new relevant question types, question text, and answer options. This update helps users expand and enhance their forms by covering key points using context-specific ideas.

The “Suggest questions” button will be shown at the bottom of a form when a form contains at least two questions. Once it's clicked, Gemini will generate two to four relevant questions with an option to choose the questions and insert them into the existing form.

Who’s impacted

End users

Why you’d use it

When creating a form, we know it can often be challenging to decide what question(s) to add next, with this feature, Gemini provides you with new ideas for questions without having to write a prompt.

Additional details

At this time, this feature does not support:
  • The generation of questions in multi-section forms.
  • The quiz-specific settings while generating questions in quizzes in Form.

Getting started

  • Admins: To access Gemini in the side panel of Workspace apps, users need to have smart features and personalization turned on. Admins can turn on the default personalization setting for their users in the Admin console.
  • End users: When you have added at least two questions to your form, click “Suggest questions” and then choose which of the suggested questions you want to insert into the form. What’s changing

We’re introducing several changes to make the act of training custom AI models for data classification in Google Drive more efficient:
  • Multi-model Support: When AI classification first launched, the product supported training a single model for a single label field.  Now, customers can train up to five unique models.  Common use cases for multiple models are:
    • Models for different labels
    • Models for different fields of a single label
    • Multiple models for the same label & field combination, with different training datasets curated for separate audiences

  • On-demand Training: Training AI classification models can be an interactive process.  With the former version of the product, the models would train on a predefined schedule.  Now, the administrator can decide when to train the model, initiating the training process on demand – enabling organizations to move at their own pace!
  • Refreshed UI: We’ve redesigned the AI classification experience from the ground up with a new onboarding flow and model details page.  With the redesigned UI, Workspace Administrators will now see richer insights into the status of model training, metrics on their training data, model recall scores, and a history of their model versions.

Who’s impacted

  • Admins

Why it matters

  • Powered by privacy-preserving AI models that can be uniquely trained on specific customer needs, AI classification automatically identifies, classifies, and labels files in Google Drive. This helps organizations standardize data classification and achieve labeling consistency at scale. Labels can then be used to trigger rules on files that can and cannot be shared through data loss prevention (DLP) controls, lifecycle management policies, as well as audit and reporting use cases. These latest enhancements give admins the flexibility to train models when they need to and for the specific and dynamic needs of their organization.

Enterprise security controls for Google Workspace with Gemini
With its rapid adoption and growing importance, organizations are rightly concerned about potential data security and privacy risks when deploying generative AI. Google Workspace with Gemini is enterprise-ready. First, Gemini keeps customer data confidential and can support compliance with different regulatory frameworks, such as HIPAA and FedRAMP High. Second, Gemini is built with a layered defense strategy for prompt injection mitigation, an emerging attack vector against AI systems. And third, Workspace comes with granular user access and data security controls, helping administrators safely and securely deploy AI tools, such as the Gemini app, Gemini in Workspace apps, and NotebookLM, across their organizations with confidence.

Automatically level audio across a video in Google Vids with balance sound
In May, we preannounced the ability to easily adjust sound levels across videos in Google Vids. Starting today, users can automatically level the volume of audio and video clips in their Vids and add audio ducking to background music, which automatically lowers (or "ducks") music when another audio or video clip’s volume starts playing. | Rollout to Rapid Release domains is complete; launch to Scheduled Release domains planned for July 21, 2025. | Available to Google Workspace customers with access to Google Vids. | Visit the Help Center to learn more about controlling audio timing, balance & transitions with audio tracks.

  • Easier navigation with product tags neatly categorized at the top of the page, and quick links to other resources like the Release Calendar.
  • Auto translation for 100+ languages using Google translate right from the footer of the website.
These updates will also be available when viewing the Workspace Updates Blog on mobile.

Use Gemini in Google Drive to execute basic organizational tasks
Starting this week, we’ve enhanced Gemini’s organizing capabilities in Drive by allowing you to use natural language to move selected files into the folder you choose. | Learn more about using Gemini in Google Drive.

Google Drive Events API now available in Developer Public Preview
Google Drive is now integrated with the Workspace Events API, which allows third-party developers to create subscriptions on Drive items and receive notifications via Cloud Pub/Sub when those resources change. | Learn more about the Google Drive Events API.

Improved email notifications following Google Meet calls, plus new sharing controls for meeting hosts
We’re improving the email notification that includes the notes doc when you use “Take notes for me” in Google Meet. The email will now include a summary of the meeting as well as “suggested next steps” in addition to the link to the notes document. Including this information gives meeting invitees a quick, helpful overview of the meeting in one place. | Learn more about email notifications for Meet calls.

Manage email subscriptions from a single location in Gmail
Last year, we introduced web and mobile updates that enable you to unsubscribe from individual emails in Gmail more easily. Today, we’re building upon this with Gmail's new "Manage subscriptions" feature. | Learn more managing subscriptions.

Search for embedded content in Google Sites
Starting today, we're making it easier to find information within a Google Site. Previously, searching in a site only showed results from the text directly on the pages. Now, when you perform a search, the results will also include content from within embedded files, such as Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and PDFs. | Learn more about searching for embedded content in Sites.

Drive IRM Update: More Control for File Owners and Shared Drive Managers
Now, individual file owners and shared drive managers can apply printing, copying, and downloading restrictions to users with edit permissions as well. Editors and owners can still edit the document itself, however they can only copy and paste document content within the document itself. | Learn more about Drive IRM.

Introducing Lucidchart and Lucidspark apps in Google Chat
Lucidchart, an app that helps users collaborate on diagrams, such as flowcharts, wireframes, entity relationship diagrams, and more, and Lucidspark, a virtual whiteboard tool, are two third-party add-ons already available across Workspace apps, such as Docs and Meet. This week, we’re excited to announce support for both of these apps in Google Chat. | Learn more about Lucidchart and Lucidspark apps in Google Chat.
