This official feed from the Google Workspace team provides essential information about new features and improvements for Google Workspace customers.


What’s changing 

Users have been able to use Gemini in the side panel of Google Drive to summarize one or multiple documents, interact with PDFs, have focused conversations about a specific Drive folder, create files and folders, and more. However, until now, this functionality was text-based only and did not account for images saved in your Drive. 

Similar to the recent video announcement, we’re happy to announce that Gemini can now answer questions or give you summaries about images in Drive. Here are some examples of what you can ask Gemini to: 

  • Summarize this image
  • Extract text from this image
  • Extract information from this receipt/invoice into a table
  • Generate alternate text for this image
  • Write a story about this image

What’s changing 

Users now have a quicker way to start editing right from Drive, using Google Vids. With this launch, when a user is previewing their video in Drive, there will be an "Open" button in the upper right that will open the video in Vids. Vids will automatically open the video file, and from there you can further edit as you see fit. For example, you can then trim the clip, add music, add text, and much more.

  • This feature works for these file types. Individual clips have limits of 35 minutes and 4 GB. 
  • Once Vids opens the video file, a new Vids file is created. Users will need to go through the regular steps to save/export to a non-Vids editable file.

What’s changing 

Earlier this year, we launched an improved version of the OAuth consent screen to the Apps Script IDE and unpublished Editor Add-ons that allows users to specify which individual scopes they would like to authorize for that script. For example, if a script requests access to a user’s Sheets and Forms files, and the users only intends to use the script with Sheets files, they can decide to only allow access to their spreadsheets and not their forms. 


This screenshot shows the new OAuth consent screen, which lets the user provide consent for a subset of the requested OAuth scopes. 

We’re excited to announce that this more granular OAuth consent screen will be expanding to an additional Apps Script execution type. Soon, published Editor add-ons powered by Apps Script will also present users with this more granular consent screen when requesting an OAuth grant. This will allow users of these add-on types to provide partial OAuth consent when authorizing new add-ons. A reminder that this also includes reconsenting to add-ons when OAuth grants expire.

Additional details 

To prepare for the release of this new consent flow, we suggest that Editor add-on developers refer to the ScriptApp and AuthorizationInfo classes. These allow Apps Script developers to programmatically interact with the scopes granted for a script. This allows developers to put in such safeguards as short-circuiting a script execution if not all scopes are granted. For more information, refer to the developer documentation. Previously available as part of the Google Workspace Developer Preview Program, we're excited to announce that the ability for developers to build Google Chat apps using the Workspace add-on framework is now generally available.

The Workspace add-ons framework makes it possible to build and maintain one app that works across multiple Workspace apps including Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Chat. This reduces complexity and improves the experience for developers, system admins, and end-users. 



In Chat, Workspace add-ons can provide helpful features, such as:
  • Previewing links from Chat messages and taking action without leaving the conversation.
  • Automating tasks across Google Workspace applications.
  • Receiving  alerts or notifications from linked external services.
  • Combining external data from 3rd party apps and services with your data from Gmail, Chat, and Calendar.

Lucid, developers of Lucidchart, Lucidspark, and Lucidscale, recently updated their existing Workspace Add-ons to now support Chat. These integrations with Google Chat enable link previews, quick search, and access management all within Chat.

What’s changing 

We’re introducing several changes to make the act of training custom AI models for data classification in Google Drive more efficient:
  • Multi-model Support: When AI classification first launched, the product supported training a single model for a single label field.  Now, customers can train up to five unique models.  Common use cases for multiple models are:
    • Models for different labels
    • Models for different fields of a single label
    • Multiple models for the same label & field combination, with different training datasets curated for separate audiences 



  • On-demand Training: Training AI classification models can be an interactive process.  With the former version of the product, the models would train on a predefined schedule.  Now, the administrator can decide when to train the model, initiating the training process on demand – enabling organizations to move at their own pace! 
  • Refreshed UI: We’ve redesigned the AI classification experience from the ground up with a new onboarding flow and model details page.  With the redesigned UI, Workspace Administrators will now see richer insights into the status of model training, metrics on their training data, model recall scores, and a history of their model versions.

  • Powered by privacy-preserving AI models that can be uniquely trained on specific customer needs, AI classification automatically identifies, classifies, and labels files in Google Drive. This helps organizations standardize data classification and achieve labeling consistency at scale. Labels can then be used to trigger rules on files that can and cannot be shared through data loss prevention (DLP) controls, lifecycle management policies, as well as audit and reporting use cases. These latest enhancements give admins the flexibility to train models when they need to and for the specific and dynamic needs of their organization.

What’s changing 

Starting today, when hovering over a newly uploaded video’s progress bar in Google Drive, you’ll see a thumbnail preview that allows you to quickly view and navigate to specific parts of a video. With the ability to find the right moments in videos, this update improves productivity and the overall video viewing experience in Google Drive.

What’s changing

Earlier this year, we announced an open beta for migrating files from Microsoft SharePoint Online to Google Drive in the New Data Migration service. Beginning today, this functionality is now generally available.

Admins can use the New Data Migration service to migrate data from SharePoint Online sites, including document libraries, folders, files and associated permissions, helping organizations transition to Google Workspace quickly and easily.

Additionally, you’ll notice a new, streamlined  interface designed to simplify your migration experience.

  • You can migrate data from up to 100 SharePoint Online sites at a time to Shared Drives in Google Drive.

Veo 3 is now available in the Gemini app for select Workspace users
At Google I/O 2025 we introduced Veo 3, our new latest video generation model that can generate video with audio. Today, Veo 3 is now available in the Gemini app for select Workspace customers.

With Veo 3 you'll notice real-world physics and accurate lip syncing - this includes things like traffic noises in the background of a city street scene, birds singing in a park, and even dialogue between characters. We also introduced a new photo to video feature that allows you to upload a photo and create an 8-second video. You can get creative by animating everyday objects, bringing your drawings and paintings to life or adding movement to nature scenes.

There is a limit of 3 daily uses for enterprise and education users and 5 daily uses for those with the Google AI Ultra for Business add-on. When you are approaching this limit, you’ll see a warning message in the UI. We’re excited to share that a refreshed experience for the Workspace Updates Blog will be launching on Monday, July 14. Some of the improvements you’ll notice are: 
  • A completely refreshed user interface that brings the Workspace Updates Blog inline with other official Google channels. 
  • A compact layout that allows you to quickly scan multiple posts, making it easier to find the announcements that matter most to you.

Drive IRM Update: More Control for File Owners and Shared Drive Managers
Now, individual file owners and shared drive managers can apply printing, copying, and downloading restrictions to users with edit permissions as well. Introducing Lucidchart and Lucidspark apps in Google Chat

What’s changing

The Information Rights Management (IRM) feature for Drive prevents the downloading, copying and printing of documents for viewers and commenters. Currently, individual file owners can use IRM to limit viewers and commenters from printing, copying, or downloading a file. Earlier this year, we launched the ability for admins to restrict these actions for users with edit permissions.

Now, individual file owners and shared drive managers can apply printing, copying, and downloading restrictions to users with edit permissions as well. Editors and owners can still edit the document itself, however they can only copy and paste document content within the document itself. 

As a whole, IRM controls give both admins and end users the ability to help prevent sensitive content from being leaked.


Getting started

  • End users: Once this feature is enabled, all entry points for downloading, printing, and copying will be removed from Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides on all platforms. Note: If a file has both an administrator-applied IRM setting and a file owner setting on it, the administrator setting takes priority. Google Drive is now integrated with the Workspace Events API, which allows third-party developers to create subscriptions on Drive items and receive notifications via Cloud Pub/Sub when those resources change. This offers developers a more reliable, featureful way of receiving events over the current files.watch and changes.watch methods that exist today. The following events are supported in the Developer Public Preview: 
  • A file has been: 
    • Added to a folder or shared drive. 
    • Moved to a folder or shared drive. 
    • Edited or a new revision is uploaded. 
    • Trashed or removed from the trash. 
  • An access proposal has been created or resolved on a file.

In March, we introduced the ability to create new files and folders using Gemini in the side panel of Google Drive to improve your organization and creation workflows. 

Starting today, we’ve enhanced Gemini’s organizing capabilities in Drive by allowing you to use natural language to move selected files into the folder you choose. Simply open Gemini in the side panel of Drive and type something similar to the following prompts to get started organizing: 
  • “Create a new folder in My Drive called Q2 forecast“ 
  • “Move the @Q1 wrap up file in my Q1 forecast folder to the @Q2 forecast folder”

Gems can help you further leverage the power of Gemini in a way that’s customized to your needs more efficiently by minimizing repetitive prompting. You can now take advantage of Gems directly from the side panel of several Google Workspace apps. This includes your custom Gems or pre-made gems. Without needing to switch between applications, you can use Gems in the side panel to:

  • Leverage a copywriting Gem to create posts and content tailored to your target audience, pre-loaded into the Gem.
  • Create a Gem that helps with sales interactions that is grounded on information for a specific company, prospect, or industry. 
  • Leverage an "assistant gem" tailored to your job role to help provide more relevant summaries for you and content for internal communications.
  • Leverage a Gem designed to help pressure test content from a certain persona (e.x C-Suite or CEO) to help you create the most compelling message.

If you don't see a Gem that meets your needs, or want to customize a Gem for a specific task, you can create your own at gemini.google.com/gems/create. Both custom and premade Gems will appear in the side panel across all supported Workspace applications, and can leverage many Workspace capabilities including @ mentioning, accessing files and folders in your corpus, and more.
