Eye opening research from Smith Publicity, Inc. clients Peter Cappelli and Ranya Nehmeh on why Hybrid Still Isn’t Working. 💡 They share evidence suggesting hybrid work settings are: • hurting collaboration, • exacerbating social isolation, and • weakening culture Plus, they offer tips on how to fix it. 📚 Peter and Ranya's compelling research--shared for the first time detailing what works and doesn't work for remote and hybrid structures--is the focus of their upcoming book, In Praise of the Office: The Limits to Hybrid and Remote Work (Wharton School Press, September 30, 2025). 👉 Read early findings in their Harvard Business Review article: https://lnkd.in/eauTe23m

  • Thank you to all our friends--new and old--who came by to see us at the U.S. Book Show! We are incredibly proud of our team, Corinne Moulder and Andrea Kiliany Thatcher who shared their expertise to standing room only crowds.

The Smith team is back from the U.S. Book Show—and still buzzing. It’s not every day you hear someone walk up to your table and say: “Oh, you’re with Smith? You’re known as the best of the best.” But that happened. Multiple times. At this year’s show, we connected with so many amazing people—longtime publishing partners, literary agents, friends from Publishers Weekly, Bowker, and BookHighlight, Women's Media Group members, and even some LinkedIn connections we finally got to meet in real life. We were blown away by the admiration people have for Smith Publicity, Inc.. And we are so incredibly proud of our team! Our own Corinne Moulder and Andrea Kiliany Thatcher took the stage as speakers (and absolutely nailed it), while Kellie Rendina and Sandra Poirier Smith held it down at the booth. And yes, I heard I was deeply missed—but don’t worry, the team showed off plenty of photos of baby Izzy on my behalf. 😉 Takeaways for Authors: What You Need to Know 📚 From Corinne’s panel on “Steady Wins the Race: Taking Midlist Authors to the Next Level,” here’s what stood out: – Reviews don’t hold the same power they once did—authors and teams are looking beyond traditional coverage. – Revisit past books for fresh angles and timely relevance. – The media landscape is shifting (layoffs, saturation), which means getting creative and personal in your pitch is more important than ever. – Niche outlets > household names when it comes to connecting with the right readers. – And perhaps most importantly… Long-term strategy wins. Think 18 months of visibility, not a six-week sprint. 🎥 On the broadcast side, Andrea led a powerhouse panel with two top-tier producers. Some gold from that session: – Subject lines make or break your pitch—200+ emails/day means you need to stand out fast. – Actionable content wins. Book mentions are great, but producers want tips, takeaways, and visual content they can actually use. – If you don’t have video footage, you likely won’t get booked. (Time to start practicing!) – “Big name” doesn’t always equal “good guest.” In fact, TikTok personalities rarely translate to TV. – And finally, live interviews are still the best way to build real relationships and boost your visibility. 🎤 One final gem: A publisher shared how they invested over $100K in a book launch… and it still flopped. Why? Because there is no magic formula. What matters most: Consistency. Hustle. Midlist mindset. And playing the long game. The team left this event reminded of why we love what we do—and why we believe so strongly in the authors we represent. If you were there, drop a comment with your biggest takeaway from the event and panels! And if you’re an author who wants to level up your strategy with a team that lives and breathes this work, let’s connect. #Marketing #BookLaunch #Publishing #Author #ThoughtLeadership

I was honored to join the "Surviving the Midlist" panel at this year’s #USBookShow, hosted by Publishers Weekly. Huge thanks to David Adams for moderating and to fellow panelists Sarah Cantin, Vida Engstrand, and Taryn Roeder for such an insightful and engaging discussion! The midlist is not a “middle ground”—it’s a foundation for long-term success. This conversation reminded me why supporting authors at every stage, particularly those who are committed to continued writing and evolving their voice, is critical to sustaining a vibrant publishing industry. 💡 Key Takeaways from the Panel: 1️⃣ Partnership mentality is everything: Success hinges on collaboration—authors, publishers, publicists, and media working together early and consistently. As both the publishing and media landscapes continue to evolve, authors who come in ready to engage in marketing brainstorms, digging into their own contacts, generating new assets, writing new content, etc. will see a bigger impact around their book launch. 2️⃣ Build a community, not just a moment: Deep, loyal reader engagement beats short-term hype every time. Identify social media platforms you will maintain long after the book launch and keep up with discussions, posts, and comments leading up to and through the release. Start a Substack or newsletter to bring your contacts together and encourage engagement. Create a resources tab on your website to offer materials and insights that touch on themes related to your work as a means to keep people coming back. 3️⃣ Trust the process of evolution: When authors grow authentically, readers stay on the journey. As Sarah expressed, many times a breakout moment is created when an author who’s established a loyal following plans a purpose pivot–they’re positioned to invite their audience to come along for a new ride while commanding new attention from audiences yet to be tapped. Strengthening connections and reinforcing network early on will always pay off later. 4️⃣ Balance data with intuition: Numbers are important, but they need to be paired with nuanced understanding of audiences and storytelling. Sometimes the most compelling promotional angles are drawn from the story-behind-the-story–unique experiences that shaped the writing process, inspiring stories that gave way to new perspectives, cultural and social motivators, etc. At Smith Publicity, we champion these principles every day. To help publishers and authors prepare for success, we've developed a resource for publishers to share with their authors—a guide to marketing strategies and partnership-building, designed to be shared well in advance of a book launch. Sharing the link in comments, if interested. Early preparation fosters the kind of momentum and alignment that activates closer to release day. Here’s to celebrating the steady climb and the partnerships that make it all possible! #publishing #bookmarketing #authorsuccess #USBookShow2025 #partnershipmentality #SmithPublicity
