Make a difference for fur seals by getting involved with the 2025 Great Seal Reveal 💚 As part of the Seabirds to Seascapes program, we’ll be monitoring Australian and New Zealand fur seal populations across a range of key sites along the NSW coastline by using drone surveys and community sightings from our Haul-Out, Call-Out citizen science platform. These sites have been strategically chosen as they’re known breeding and resting spots, where data collected will help inform critical marine conservation initiatives and fill knowledge gaps essential for responsibly managing human-seal interactions. You never know what you might find in the dark 🤩 Our second midnight survey of the Illawarra Lowlands Grassy Woodland has unmasked the rare Southern Myotis and confirmed the value of these urban grassy woodlands for threatened species 🦇 We’re working with the community to protect their environment and are considering solutions like building and installing nest boxes, planting preferred roost trees and conserving tree hollows. 📸: A Pike/DCCEEW

Sounds like it might be time to go bird watching 👀 Brolgas and other threatened waterbirds are flocking to wetlands in the Riverina thanks to conservation efforts that have rejuvenated these natural havens 🙌🐦 Local birdwatchers and environmental water managers are noticing an increase in threatened waterbird species at Fivebough wetlands, near Leeton, just months after earthworks were completed to improve the hydrology. The earthworks modified existing channels, removed blockages caused by sediment and mud and created better flow paths for water distribution. Surveillance cameras have also captured an increase in Brolgas roosting at neighbouring wetland Tuckerbil, with our Water for the Environment program keeping the water flowing in their favour. 📸 Chris Tzaros

The next stage of the Town Water Risk Reduction Program has kicked off, backed by $15 million in funding to strengthen water and sewerage services in rural and remote NSW 💧 Phase 3 of the program will be rolled out over the next 3 years and continues to support councils and local water utilities to manage risks and deliver safer, more reliable water. We’re committed to reaching Net Zero emissions by 2050 🌏 To effectively reduce emissions, we first need to know where emissions come from. The Net Zero Emissions Dashboard makes it easy to view past and projected emissions across NSW. It uses data to model emissions across every sector up to 2050, taking into account current trends, technology advancements and policy commitments. From individual mines and agriculture to construction and vehicles, we can see how emissions in every sector of the economy are changing over time, and where more work is needed 🌱 The dashboard is publicly available, providing state and local government, businesses and communities insight into emission trends: https://lnkd.in/gBfXZJQr

"The amount of information and interesting tidbits of knowledge that people have that I've met on the side of the road... sometimes it's completely changed the course of a project" 💚 Luke is one of our dedcicated Senior Conservation Planning Officers under the Saving Our Species program, working on conservation projects to help various threatened species, including the veined doubletail (Diuris venosa), magenta lilly pilly (Syzygium paniculatum) and broad-leaved pepperbush (Tasmannia purpurascens). His incredibly important work takes him to Barrington Tops, the lands of the Birrbay, Guringay and Warrimay people of the Gathang language group, working with Indigenous communities to protect threatened species.

6 new offspring have been detected in Warrumbungle National Park’s feral predator-free area, raising the total number of wallabies within the area to 18 💚 12 endangered brush-tailed rock-wallabies were originally translocated from Square Top Mountain in Warrumbungle National Park into this new feral predator-free area in September 2024. The brush-tailed rock-wallaby is one of Australia’s most at risk species, with feral predator-free areas, such as this one, being a vital part of our conservation efforts to reverse species decline and extinctions.

We’re celebrating Science Week with some un-frog-ettable facts 🐸 Frogs are great indicators of ecosystem health and can help us monitor environmental and water management outcomes. Each species has a unique call, which can be used to identify populations and assess changes in habitat conditions over time. Learn more about our research and how our scientists, including Bec Wood and Daniel Coleman, help protect water dependent species: https://lnkd.in/gfvkCDp3 #ScienceWeek

Some seriously cute commuters have been snapped using a wildlife underpass in Port Stephens 🐨 Completed in 2023, thanks to funding by the NSW Koala Strategy, the underpass is part of a broader effort to give wildlife a safe way to cross the road in known vehicle-strike hotspots. Monitoring has been ongoing since completion of the underpass, with cameras capturing all kinds of furry foot traffic including koalas, echidnas, and kangaroos. With support from Google and WWF, AI helps identify animals in the images, speeding up the process by filtering out false triggers like moving vegetation 🍃 📸: Port Stephens Council

We’re protecting Sydney’s beauty and its rich history by adding some of the parks that surround Sydney Harbour to the NSW State Heritage Register 🌳 Considered Sydney Harbour’s “green necklace”, each site reflects the city’s layered history, from its Aboriginal heritage and industrial past to its modern urban parkland design. The listings follow extensive consultation with local councils, heritage experts and community groups and will ensure these lush landscapes are protected into the future 💚 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gRVtDcmm
