PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

This is a senior journalist role based in Hong Kong, where we are setting up a new team under the BBC News World Service Languages. The team will play a key role in our ambition of growing the audiences of 42 language services by producing original, engaging content. The ideal candidate will have strong editorial judgment and experience in covering international news. You will have ample opportunities to work with talented reporters from around the world.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM
The new team sits under Global Journalism of BBC World Service Languages. It is tasked with covering news stories that appeal to an international - not just regional - audience during working hours in Asian time zones. We work closely with our London and overseas teams to maximise news coverage.

Global Journalism produces high-quality journalism, including text, video and social content. Our offer ranges from breaking news, trending stories, fast-turnaround explainers, thoughtful analysis and human-interest features for a global audience. The content is in English, which will then be available for language services to translate.

We are a positive, enthusiastic and collaborative team, and seek candidates with energy and a drive to succeed.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

• You will write stories, or edit, sub or update pieces written by language service journalists, to keep them clear and engaging, whether in text, video or social content.

• You will help other journalists develop ideas and produce content for an international audience.

• You will supervise video production - making sure that videos are cut to hold audience interest, and be factually accurate and engaging.

• You will pitch and produce fresh, interesting stories of your own that appeal to both language services and the English website.

• You will make editorial decisions based on the BBC editorial guidelines and audience data.

• You will coordinate with editors and reporters from BBC bureaux across the world and supervise production.

• You will effectively communicate plans and ideas in meetings with different parts of the BBC.

• You will have to proactively stay up to date with style changes, verification processes, copyright, legal and editorial issues.

• You will step up to lead the Hong Kong team in the absence of the team leader, or as required.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Strong editorial judgement with experience handling breaking news on digital platforms

• A track record of covering the international news agenda and delivering insightful, high-quality journalism to the global audience

• A sense of initiative and a willingness to learn and use existing and emerging technologies in editorial production and resource management

• Ability to work independently and flexibly, especially in the face of changing deadlines and priorities

• A great team player who communicates openly and effectively

DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:

• Video producing and editing skills are an advantage
• Experience and skills in data journalism

• Experience in handling social media content such as social albums or reels is also desirable, but training will be provided

• Experience of managing or leading teams
