Back to school means back to packed lunches — and we know this can be a struggle for many parents. SickKids Dietitian Alisa Bar-Dayan has you covered! Her go-to packed lunch includes a sandwich or wrap with protein and veggies, fresh veggies and fruit, as well as high-protein snacks like roasted chickpeas, or a homemade trail mix and, of course, water! “When I think of a lunch box, I think of something with protein,” says Alisa. “Fruits and vegetables are something we always encourage too.” Even if you have a selective eater, there’s still options. Here are some of Alisa’s top tips when it comes to building a balanced lunch ⬇️ 💪 Protein is the most important part, which can be as easy as packing leftovers, like last night’s chicken on a sandwich with lettuce and cucumbers, or pasta and meat sauce. 🍖 When using deli meats, look for nitrate free and choose turkey, chicken or lean ham for healthy options. 🥒 If your child only eats one kind of fruit or veggie, it’s OK to pack the same thing every day! 🥕 If you want to test out new food, start with just one. For example, add just one baby carrot to their favourite cucumber snack. 🏷️ Does your child need help knowing what to eat when? Label the containers as “morning” and “afternoon” snacks 🥨 You can make your own nut-free trail mix with seeds, pretzels, whole grain cereal and a few chocolate chips. 👨👩👦👦 Kids can help pack their lunches and snacks – this strengthens food skills, encourages excitement for eating school lunches/snacks and creates space for more family bonding. 🧀 Any lunch bag leftovers can be eaten on the way home from school.
