Health and Safety for TransAlta Hydro

At TransAlta, we not only put safety first for our staff and contractors but also keep the public at top of mind as well. Please be mindful of your proximity around any water way. If you are playing or fishing in the waters downstream of ANY dams, you should know that there may be a surge of water at any given time as those dams support the power grids and can fluctuate water levels rapidly. Exercise extreme caution when enjoying the waterways and reservoirs.

Planning to spend your weekend on the water? Keep safety top of mind as you enjoy rivers and lakes near hydro dams.  While these sites help power our communities, the waters around them can be unpredictable. Sudden changes in flow, water levels, or temperature can create hazardous conditions. Before you head out, remember to:  • Keep a safe distance from all dams and generating stations • Check weather and water conditions, and use only approved access points for swimming or boating. • Stick to designated areas, follow signage and respect barriers or fences. • Watch for signs of strong currents or sudden depth changes.   Let’s keep it a fun—and safe—summer on the water.

  • During a recent planned outage at our Sarnia facility, the TransAlta team and APM Gas Canada turned workplace safety into community impact.  For every safe workday, TransAlta and APM contributed to an innovative joint safety incentive program, collectively raising $30,000 for Bluewater Health. These funds will support the purchase of new incubators for the children’s department. Huge kudos to the entire crew for showing how safety and community go hand in hand!

  • TransAlta was delighted to support the 2025 Youth Water Council, an initiative led by North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance that empowers high school students to learn about their local watershed and take action to protect it. This year’s council created Watershed Keepers Education Kits to teach Alberta students in grades 4-6 about watershed health, sparking curiosity and action at an early age. Did you know that TransAlta helped launch the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance in the late 1990s? Today, we’re proud to continue investing in its future as we support the next generation of changemakers.

Our team in Centralia, Washington recently welcomed students from the Southwest Washington Hydropower & STEM Career Academy for a behind-the-scenes tour of our facility. Students got an up-close look at how we generate power and had the chance to connect with our team, ask questions and hear first-hand from leaders in the field. Thank you to these students for bringing such great energy and thoughtful questions!
