Reaching the #30x30 target of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework #KMGBF and successfully implementing the #BBNJ Agreement requires reliable and science-based information on where to focus marine conservation efforts. Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas #EBSAs provide the best available scientific knowledge to identify the most important places in the ocean for biodiversity. Following the adoption of new #EBSAs modalities at #COP16Colombia, the CBD Secretariat (UN Biodiversity) developed a few resources to explain how to submit or update #EBSAs descriptions: 🔵 EBSAs Handbook (a step-by-step guide for preparing a submission): https://lnkd.in/gTSuzcEy 🔵 Webinar on the new modalities: https://lnkd.in/dqhabXcj 🌊 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dQReHybY

The official account for the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
About us
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992 and entered into force on 29 December 1993. It is the first global agreement to cover all aspects of biological diversity: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), based in Montreal, Canada, was established to support the goals of the Convention. Its primary functions are to organize meetings, prepare reports, assist member governments in the implementation of the various programmes of work, coordinate with other international organizations and collect and disseminate information.

MEAs Engagement in the Global Review of KMGBF Will Transform It into a Catalyst for Collective Action and Shared Gains. A joint effort by #MEAs to contribute to the #GlobalReview of #KMGBF will generate unprecedented collective benefits. Together, we can make it a powerful tool for synergistic planning and implementation. A co-created and jointly owned Global Review will result in: 1. A shared evidence base for #MEAs, Parties, and all stakeholders for tracking progress on halting and reversing biodiversity loss and, attribute our individual contributions to it, 2. A pathway towards reduced reporting burden for countries through aligned approaches, 3. A roadmap for achieving #KMGBF targets that need accelerated collective action, 4. Solid foundation for stronger synergies across conventions, global processes, and national policies, and 5. Coherent global messaging on #biodiversity, #climate, and #sustainableDevelopment UN Biodiversity is proud to be a partner of Federal Office for the Environment FOEN Switzerland, UN Environment Programme, UNEP-WCMC for the event in Bogis-Bossey and is thankful to Niklaus Wagner , Korvenoja Tita , Neville Ash , Hesiquio Benitez , Diane Klaimi , Clarisse Kehler Siebert , Marina von Weissenberg , Tiffany Straza , Emilie VAUCHEL , Yannik J. Today is #WorldLakeDay! Lakes sustain life. They provide 90% of the world’s surface freshwater, support biodiversity, regulate climate, and power economies. From drinking water to food security, from carbon storage to culture, lakes are vital. But many lakes today are in crisis. Pollution, overuse, and rising temperatures are driving widespread decline. More than a quarter of monitored lakes are becoming more polluted and turbid. Habitats are disappearing. Aquatic life is under threat. And despite their importance, lakes are often left out of national policies. It’s time to work to change that. The knowledge and the technology to restore our lakes exist; what’s needed now is the will to treat them as the vital resources they are. On today’s first-ever World Lake Day, let's be aware of the problem lakes are facing. Let's protect them today for a sustaining life tomorrow: https://lnkd.in/gCRApDWN
