The Swiss made, fully open LLM #Apertus was released this Monday! 👇 EPFL, ETH Zurich and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) released Apertus 2 September, Switzerland’s first large-scale, multilingual language model (LLM). As a fully open LLM, Apertus allows researchers, professionals and experienced enthusiasts to build upon the model and adapt it to their specific needs, as well as to inspect any part of the training process (see Apertus website: https://lnkd.in/ey6mypX9). Apertus is freely available in two sizes – featuring 8 billion and 70 billion parameters. It was trained on 15 trillion tokens across more than 1,000 languages – 40% of the data is non-English. AI researchers, professionals, and experienced enthusiasts can either access the model through the strategic partner Swisscom or download it from Hugging Face – a platform for AI models and applications – and deploy it for their own projects. Apertus was developed with due consideration to Swiss data protection laws, Swiss copyright laws, and the transparency obligations under the EU AI Act. Particular attention has been paid to data integrity and ethical standards: the training corpus builds only on data which is publicly available. Involved institutions: EPFL, CSCS, Swisscom, ETH Zürich, EPFL AI Center, ETH AI Center Involved people: Martin Jaggi, Thomas Schulthess, Imanol Schlag, Daniel Dobos, Joshua Tan, Antoine Bosselut More: Public AI #AI #AIforGood #trustworthyAI #HuggingFace https://lnkd.in/ecT53htV

Swiss taxpayers fund innovation… but the payoff leaves the country ✈️ Switzerland 🇨🇭 invests heavily in early-stage research and innovation. But when promising startups hit growth stage ↗️ , many have to seek capital abroad - and so are attractive investment opportunities lost. Finance professor Laurent Frésard (USI Università della Svizzera italiana & SFI Swiss Finance Institute) argues that Swiss pension funds could capitalize on attractive return opportunities and help close this critical funding gap. • 𝐒𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐳𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝’𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬! With strengths to celebrate and gaps to tackle. Based on our latest spider graph, here’s our take: ➕ Innovation & Academia are our powerhouses: Switzerland 🇨🇭 is a global leader in patents and boasts top-tier universities that are engines for innovation and spinouts. ➖ Capital & Ecosystem need a boost: While early-stage funding is strong, we're losing out on late-stage capital and need a more connected, specialized ecosystem to help startups scale. 🎯 The goal: To create a cohesive "Deep Tech Nation" where excellence in innovation is matched by an ecosystem that can turn great ideas into global success stories. To be the #1 Deep Tech Nation by 2033, Switzerland must do more than invent. It must host and scale innovation. We’ve got the IP, the science, and growing capital. Now we need scale muscles and a bigger stage. Read the full analysis by Amara Cespedes to understand where we're strong, where we're slow, and what to do about it. Link in the comments! 👇

"𝑊𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑤𝑒 𝑎𝑠 𝑆𝑤𝑖𝑡𝑧𝑒𝑟𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑 🇨🇭 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑑, 𝑜𝑟 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑤𝑒 𝑏𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑑?" This was one central question at our recent event, and the energy in the room was the start of an answer. The video captures the spirit of an evening dedicated to shaping Switzerland's future. As you'll hear, the stakes are high. Deep Tech is today's fundamental base technology, just as railways and electricity were in past centuries. It is about nothing less than securing Switzerland's next century of prosperity. The consensus is clear: 𝐖𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝. 𝐍𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐭. Our mission until 2033 is to ↗️ double venture capital investment, create 100,000 new high-tech 👩💼 jobs, and ensure the next global leaders in 🤖 deep tech are born and scaled right here in Switzerland. In today's fast-paced world, Switzerland is poised to become a leading hub for deep tech innovation. But what steps do we need to take to realize this potential? In a recent interview, I've outlined three key areas:   - Boosting University Spinoffs: We need more startups arising from academic institutions that can scale effectively. These spinoffs are the seeds of tomorrow's industry leaders. - Attracting and Retaining Talent: Access to top international talent is crucial. Switzerland should strive to be the prime destination for brilliant minds, ensuring they choose to stay and innovate here. - Enhancing Capital Access: Increasing domestic investment in startups and scale-ups will solidify our position as a tech powerhouse, nurturing the next generation of commercial champions.   A flourishing startup ecosystem is essential for Switzerland’s prosperity. By fostering the growth of innovative enterprises, we can build new, major companies that contribute to our national success.   Why should you support Deep Tech Nation Switzerland ? It’s simple: we are already an accomplished nation, and we aim to sustain our success into the future. Join us in ensuring Switzerland remains at the forefront of global innovation.
