Strong intellectual property frameworks and new partnership models are key to addressing the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), WIPO Director General Daren Tang said at the opening of this year’s joint WIPO-WHO-WTO technical symposium. AMR occurs when bacteria and other microorganisms evolve to resist medicines like antibiotics, making infections harder to treat and increasing mortality risk. WIPO hosted this year’s edition of the annual trilateral symposium, organized jointly with the World Health Organization and World Trade Organization. The day-long meeting brought together policymakers, experts, industry and civil society to examine gaps in innovation, supply and access, particularly in lower-income countries. Discussions focused on aligning innovation, manufacturing and access strategies, and on how health, trade and IP policies can reinforce each other.
