As a UX Lead, I’ve been working with mid-size and large organizations for over 19 years, helping improve UX of complex systems, accessibility, performance and design of their digital experiences. Among many others, I’ve been working with the European Parliament, OTTO, Zalando, Marc O'Polo, Axel Springer SE, and REWE Digital.
I’m also the founder and editor-in-chief of SmashingMag, a popular online magazine and platform for designers and developers, where I help curate and organize friendly and inclusive conferences, such as SmashingConfs, and run video courses and live UX training (Smart Interface Design Patterns linked above).
I am incredibly passionate about writing, speaking, running workshops, and sharing what I’ve learned on UX. I love complex UX challenges, intricate processes, and difficult stakeholders, and my goal is to design digital experiences that people understand and can fall in love with.

Stop Using Accessibility Overlays. They’re Not a Solution. Overlays promise a quick fix for accessibility, but they’re just a mask covering deeper issues. Here’s why these tools fail: 1. False Sense of Compliance: Overlays claim to make your site accessible, but they often miss critical issues that proper audits and design improvements catch. 2. Poor User Experience: Instead of fostering inclusivity, overlays disrupt the user experience, making navigating harder. 3. Accessibility Doesn’t Work Like This: Real accessibility isn’t about slapping a widget on your site. It’s about thoughtful, intentional design that accommodates all users. 4. Bad for SEO: Overlays can interfere with search engine crawlers, hurting your site’s visibility and rankings. 5. Legal Risks: Accessibility overlays don’t guarantee legal compliance. They often leave gaps that could open you up to additional legal action. 6. Negative Effect on Assistive Tools: Overlays can force users with disabilities to abandon their preferred tools and adapt to a new, inconsistent set of features—bad UX. 7 Overlays Can Create New Violations: Yup, they can create new noncompliance issues—adding to the problem. 8. Mobile: Let’s not even go there. Good accessibility comes from designing with inclusivity in mind, not from a huge bandaid. If you want an accessible website, invest in thoughtful design, accessibility audits, and time-tested solutions. Your audience — and your bottom line — will thank you. I think we need different term for “best practice”. I’m not a content designer, but something like, “Non-WCAG accessibility issue” feels more truthful. In accessibility, when something is broken, but it does not fail any of the WCAG success criteria, we often see it labelled as “best practice”. Which everybody inevitably just ignores, because it feels like an opinion. Language is important! And, the term “best practice” implies that what you’ve done is actually fine, but there’s an alternative way you could do it that might be better, if you want to do it. In reality, what we’re really saying when we log a “best practice” issue is, “this thing is inaccessible, and we’re bringing it to your attention in the hope you’ll fix it. But, we can’t fail it as it’s not technically covered as a testable scenario in the standard we’re currently assessing it against.” What are your thoughts? Do you use a better term than “best practice” in your reports? #accessibility #a11y
