    👨🍼 Today I start my last month of a total of 6 months of parental leave – here are my key takeaways 👶 I am lucky to work at a company that fully and truly supports both men and women to take parental leave. 💚 It allows my wife and I to divide 12 months of parental leave equally. Overall, it has been amazing to dedicate time to my family, and see my wife return back to the work she loves so much. For us, it's been relatively smooth sailing. However, in the past months I have noticed how taking longer leave as a dad is still far from the norm, and I thought it would be important to share my own experience: 👨 Taking parental leave and career dedication are not (always) correlated On multiple occasions during my leave, people connected taking a longer leave to a lower career dedication — it being a signal that you might want to "take it more easy" or "take a nice long break from work", and were often quick to ask if I was not afraid it would negatively affect my career. Although I can see where those thoughts might come from, they surprised me, and they show we still have a long way to go towards true equality at work. First of all and by far the most important: splitting my leave with my wife allows her to pick up her career earlier, which is equally important as my own — especially considering her leave is longer no matter what, as she was the one who carried the baby. Secondly, I gained unique experience in these months that I believe will be very beneficial throughout the rest of my career. Choosing a longer leave had nothing to do with career ambition; it was simply about how we could best divide our time as a family, so we both have space to be there for our family, whilst also taking both of our careers into account. 👫 The roles we play in a family are not fixed Whilst preparing for becoming parents, we were told over and over again that studies show babies generally release oxytocin by receiving comfort and safety from their mom, and from playing and interacting with their dads. Whilst my wife was on leave, this seemed to check out. Before my leave, I was the “fun” one, whereas my wife was the “safe” one. However, I was surprised to see how that completely flipped around as soon as I was on leave. I find it interesting that our gender roles can switch so easily, and it makes me wonder how much of it is natural, and how much of it relates to our culture and habits instead. I am normally not one to post long elaborate posts on LinkedIn, but I decided to post anyway because I noticed how many preconceptions there still are surrounding this topic. It is a complex matter embedded in our culture, and I was surprised how strongly it is still surrounded by taboos. I think it’s important we talk about these things more openly, which is why I decided to share my own experience. And now, I’m going to enjoy the remaining leave together with Otto, excited to return to work at the end of July! 👋 #ParentalLeave #Fatherhood #Equality
