📢 Open for Public Consultation: The beta version of the Eco Food Choice food ecolabelling methodology! After months of collaboration, we’re excited to announce the release of the beta version of the #EcoFoodChoice #LCA methodology for food ecolabelling. It includes comprehensive guidelines from LCI databases development to aggregated environmental score calculation. The methodology builds on the #PEF framework while addressing key limitations and introducing practical improvements. This is a key milestone towards a harmonised ecolabelling methodology across Europe. It is a collective and pragmatic step forward towards an ecolabelling system that is both scientifically robust and actionable. This "beta" methodology is now open for public consultation. 💧 Com millorar la depuració d’aigües residuals en petits municipis? Conjuntament amb el Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA), hem validat un nou tipus de reactor biològic que combina comunitats microbianes en forma de biofilm i plàncton. Aquesta simbiosi permet millorar notablement la qualitat de l’aigua tractada en depuradores de poblacions petites, reduint la concentració de nutrients i determinats patògens. ♻️ 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 is emerging as a viable, scalable solution for managing organic waste in small and medium-sized towns. Rather than relying on large centralised plants, this approach makes it possible to treat organic waste locally, closing the loop and engaging the community. 🔍 According to doctoral research by Angelica Oviedo Ospina, recently published in the 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, decentralised systems can manage 100% of municipal organic waste in small towns in a sustainable and cost-effective way. Based on a case study in 𝗟𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗱𝗮 in #Catalonia, this scientific publication demonstrates that incorporating specific mechanised systems into decentralised community composting systems shortens processing time, reduces labour demand and lowers annual costs while generating high-quality compost that meets Class A standards under Spanish regulations. 🌱 These findings align with European #CircularEconomy goals, demonstrating how community composting can help towns to reduce their reliance on landfills, cut emissions and recover nutrients for local soils.
