About us

Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) was established in 2002, and is a strategic partner of the Hong Kong SAR Government in advancing Hong Kong as an international centre of design excellence in Asia. Our public mission is to promote wider and strategic use of design and design thinking to create business value and improve societal well-being. Our flagship programmes include Business of Design Week (BODW; since 2002) – Asia’s leading annual event on design, innovation and brands; DFA Awards (since 2003) – a well-recognised annual awards that celebrate outstanding designs with Asian perspectives; and Knowledge of Design Week (KODW; since 2006) – an annual thematic programme that gathers the global design community to explore how design can solve complex challenges of our society. We also manage a Design Incubation Programme and Fashion Incubation Programme (since 2012 and 2016) – 2-year programmes to nurture future design and fashion entrepreneurs; and launched FASHION ASIA HONG KONG (since 2016) – an initiative combining conversations, interactions and cultural exchanges to position the city as an Asian hub for fashion trade and business development. Over time, Hong Kong Machines has evolved into a distinctive and recognisable brand, attracting interest from various media outlets seeking to license the IP for product manufacturing. UBL Universal Basketball League by Inoshita SakaTaro An original Hong Kong basketball manga created by illustrator Inoshita Satataro and writer Beavis Yu. Dynamic panels and engaging characters bring the story to life. Hong Kong Design Centre proudly presents the new exhibition ‘Urban Yarns’ today. This exhibition is not just a visual delight but an immersive, tactile experience of design and knitting artistry—inviting visitors to touch and feel the intricacy and creativity of textiles! ✨   With warmth and intention, ‘Urban Yarns’ reinterprets this legacy for the modern era, using design as a bridge to thread past and present. Documenting the city’s shifting identity through pioneering textile works and interactive installations, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the fundamentals of knit design and even become co-creators as they engage with the textures, techniques, and stories woven into Hong Kong’s cultural fabric.   • 【HKDC Co-organised Exhibition】Reimagining 'Made in Hong Kong' through the Craft of Wooden Furniture In Woodily Made in Hong Kong, published by P.PLUS LIMITED. The book documents the experiences of carpenters across generations, captures the history and spirit of “Made in Hong Kong” furniture, sparking reflection on urban memory, craft heritage, and future possibilities. To extend the book’s exploration of local craftsmanship and creative practice, the editorial team presents the exhibition ‘Woodily Made in Hong Kong - Mak’s Hand Rules’. It features five sets of Ming-style furniture co-created by master Mak Kwun Kuen (Mark) and his apprentices. These works retain the essence of traditional Chinese joinery while responding to contemporary living needs. The exhibition also extends the book’s concept of “gathering at the table,” inviting carpenters, designers, makers, architects, and the public to sit together and engage in dialogues. Visitors are not only invited to appreciate the furniture but to participate in a cultural gathering that celebrates craftsmanship and sparks creative exchange. 'Woodily Made in Hong Kong' is funded by the third edition of 'The Next Writer Publication Funding Scheme' (Funding Scheme). The Funding Scheme is organised by Hong Kong Publishing Federation and sponsored by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency.
