How’s this for a “mass EV retrofit”?! We need to do a lot more #criticalminerals #mining in the near term, and we need to do it right. ⚡️Thanks Clayton Franklin and EPCA - Electric Power Conversions Australia for a fantastic visit to see your 100-tonne EV retrofitted Caterpillar Inc. 777 haul truck. With a new tray by Austin Engineering Ltd (so big it doesn’t need #hungryboards to get to full capacity), MW-class charging by UON PTY LTD and 1.8MWh of batteries from #Ireland(!) by Xerotech using #NMC 21700 cells from #Korea. ⚡️Clayton says: “By converting existing mining vehicles into fully-electric systems, you could expect savings of approximately $703k p.a. in combined OpEx / CapEx / maintenance costs per vehicle. For a fleet size of 650 vehicles, you could reduce $0.5bil in costs with a carbon reduction of 1.1mil tonnes.” Latest testing shows 10hr range and 50 min charge times. And it’s quieter for #drivers, performs better - instant torque means lower drivetrain wear and climbing steeper gradients. ⚡️With 5500 haul trucks in Australia seeking an electrification solution and 10x that many globally, there’s GWh’s of #lithiumbattery demand here alone.
