How I improved API response times 💡 A while back, I was working on a project where I had to generate embeddings from images. I tried out different models, compared their performances, and finally settled on one that seemed to work best. Everything looked good except for one thing, the model was taking longer than I was comfortable with, to generate embeddings. Curiosity got the better of me one weekend, so I dug into the inner workings of the model. That’s when I discovered something interesting, the model wasn’t just generating embeddings. It was also calculating the age and gender of the people in the images. For my use case, this extra processing was unnecessary. So, I tweaked the setup to instruct the model to only generate embeddings. The result? The API response time improved by 30% just by eliminating unnecessary steps. The takeaway: when working with third-party models, don’t assume you have zero control.
