I don't find very useful this kind of pseudo "checklist". Most of the things here are not things actionable on their own (will likely highly depend on your organisation's structure, complexity, culture, etc.) and when they are, they are digital/tech focused. On a side note, one glaring valid criticism of most sustainability practices is that they tend to focus on operational improvement, quality and control. And as with ethical, inclusive, and systemic/planet/environment/life centered design, they tend to assume (amongst other things): 1) the linear causality and/or fixed causal relationships within parts of the system (e.g. any form of root-cause analysis, iceberg model, causal hierarchies, etc.); 2) a form of intrinsic value of the parts which allow; 3) a moral value judgement based on this supposed intrinsic value (sometimes raised to objective truths); and lastly, 4) that we can know and avoid unintended consequences. All are not issues per se, but limitations on the sense-making capabilities they enable. What's an issue, however, is that these frameworks tend to vehiculate the idea that this is the designer's responsibility/authority to do all that they prescribe (when they are not simply stating so).

I love a good list of actionable and specific things designers can do to make more sustainable products—thank you! That said, designers seldom work in a vacuum and if we can't convince our teams that there's value in this work for both the people we serve and for the business then it's less likely to ship. Consider adding 'so that...' value statements for each item to give designers talking points when their teams are not embracing sustainability. Furthermore, showing their relative value would help designers advocate for the subset that has the most impact toward sustainability metrics if they can't have it all.

Awesome list of resources Vitaly Friedman. I'd like to share a paper that explores how a Design Thinking approach can be enhanced to consider the environment as a key stakeholder in the creation of digital services https://bit.ly/3TFhxy8 It was done in collaboration with subject matter experts and other Designers passionate about this topic. If you find it useful please leave your comments here: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/pmiani_environmental-sustainability-for-digital-activity-7031243948954144769-PmJi?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

Sustainability is so trendy word, often overused. That’s a good checklist but in general just about basics of creating an efficient, useful and accessible digital design.

What’s the evidence for vector graphics over bitmap images? I suspect rendering a vector image for every zoom level on every visit costs more energy than saved through reduced data transfer.

Why is this checklist considered sustainable (classical sense)? Don't see the ecological benefit of these practices. The guide has plant emoji which led me to believe we're talking about classical sustainability 🌱
