𝐒𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐑: 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐄𝐑 (𝐑𝐄𝐑): Recognizable by the ribosomes attached to its surface, the RER is primarily responsible for the synthesis of proteins that are either secreted or integrated into cell membranes. It also contributes to hormone production and the maintenance of cellular structures. 𝐒𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐑 (𝐒𝐄𝐑): Lacking ribosomes, the SER specializes in the production of lipids, detoxification of chemicals, and regulation of carbohydrate metabolism. It plays an essential role in energy management and the neutralization of toxins. 🧩𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥: The ER is crucial in correctly folding newly synthesized proteins. Through the help of molecular chaperones, glycosylation checkpoints, UPR activation, and ERAD, the ER carefully monitors and handles proteins, protecting cells from the harmful effects of misfolded proteins and maintaining cellular health. Misfolded proteins are identified and directed to the ER-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway for removal.
