Manuell ekologisk restaurering I år har vi ett fält-team på försök som genomför manuellt restaureringsarbete. De har under säsongen jobbat med deflektorer, pluggar och strukturer i vattendrag. På bilden nedan skapar Arvid Perä och Kasper Norstedt tillsammans med mig två forsnackar i Svanabäcken. Dessa ska på ett naturligt sätt genom dämning bibehålla fiskevatten i trumman under en väg.

This section of the Clunie Water at Newbigging was one of our first upper Dee catchment planting projects back in 2014. In partnership with a local tenant farmer and Invercauld Estate, and funded through The Scottish Government with support from The Woodland Trust, over 15ha of native woodland has thrived. It’s now an impressive sight as you drive through the glen from Braemar up to Glenshee, thanks in part to a sustained maintenance programme of weeding, replanting and fence fixing. In Sweden’s Nordic Taiga, waterways served as transport routes for logs to coastal sawmills. Rivers were straightened, boulders removed or blasted with dynamite, and natural obstacles cleared to ease timber floating. Thousands of small dams were built to store snowmelt water, which was then released during spring to create short bursts of higher flow. Although timber floating has long ceased, many of these obsolete dams remain – fragmenting river systems and blocking the movement of fish, aquatic insects, sediment, organic matter, nutrients, and seeds. Later, additional dams were built for hydropower. Compounding the problem of river fragmentation, road culverts were installed without ecological consideration – often too narrow or elevated – creating thousands of additional barriers to aquatic connectivity. Rewilding Sweden’s initiative Liberating Rivers focuses on removing these barriers and restoring natural flow dynamics in boreal catchments. Yesterday the USDA Forest Service awarded me with the Rise of the future award 2024 in the category Public Awareness. I thank all my former WFMF colleagues, volunteers and students for contributing to this effort. We did something special the past 10 years! We started an unstoppable river revolution! We can all be really proud and a recognition to you all! Thank you! And thanks Nathaniel Gillespie Joshua Royte Kelsey Aho for promoting this! The jury report: Herman is recognized for his work in raising awareness of the importance of restoring free-flowing rivers around the world to save migratory fish. Through Herman’s imagination and skill to partner and execute, he has created dozens of educational trainings, global online webinars, films, scientific reports, multiple publications, and 6 bi-annual World Fish Migration Day celebrations in 104 countries. This sustained and diverse public awareness campaign has effectively raised global consciousness and support for reconnecting aquatic habitat to benefit migratory fish and the communities that depend on these fish. Partnering with Mr. Wanningen has provided opportunities for the Forest Service Aquatics Program to raise awareness of its work in restoring aquatic organism passage and flood resiliency to audiences across the country and in Europe.
