"The Zoo Scientist" was created in September 2015, first as a Facebook page, under the name "International Zoo News". The idea was to share news and information on the role of modern zoos in conservation, research and education. As this page always tried to focus as much as possible on the scientific side of zoos, the name was changed upon the creation of the website and twitter account. The Zoo Scientist is 100% not-for-profit and it is for everyone! Zoos, zoo professionals, students and scientists of all areas are welcome, and so are general public and wildlife/animal enthusiasts. We aim to provide you with reliable, useful and educational material. We want this page to turn into one of your main sources of information for world-wide Zoo Science.

Research published in the Journal of Zoo and Aquarium Research (JZAR) assessed stress in Malayan tapirs during invasive veterinary procedures, and whether brushing can alleviate stress during those procedures: 🧹Heart-rate variability (HRV) measured - increased during and after punctures, also matching with stress behaviours (valid stress indicator?). 🧹HRV during husbandry training (blood collection and brushing) varied across individuals and days - no clear negative effect of punctures. 🧹HRV during brushing was closer to standing position than other postures - brushing may have a rewarding effect on tapirs. 🧹More research needed, but first HRV analysis of Malayan tapirs conducted, and brushing shown to potentially alleviate stress during veterinary procedures. --- Read paper (open access): https://lnkd.in/eTmEwt24 --- #ZooResearch #ZooScience #tapirs #zoovet #animalhusbandry

In the wild, female Sumatran orangutans are responsible for rearing their offspring, but when housed socially in human care, do males exhibit paternal care? A study in Zoo Biology investigated: 🦧Interactions of three family groups (Sumatran + hybrids) were recorded across 168 focal follows. 🦧Males in all three groups/sites exhibited both direct (e.g. playing, food-sharing) and indirect (e.g. tolerance, defense) paternal behaviours. 🦧Father-immature interactions were more often initiated by the immature individuals. 🦧Findings suggest male orangutans exhibit paternal behaviour in human care, and highlights the importance of studying behaviour across multiple contexts. #ZooConservation in Action!
🎉 Our award-winning Darwin Project in Northwest Panay, Philippines, ended in the best possible way as our funder, the #DarwinInitiative, gave a fantastic score of A+ (moderately exceeded outcome) to our project and its final report! 🐗 This is a testament to how much we and our in-country partner Philippine Initiative for Environmental Conservation | PhilinCon achieved with this project. Our results show that local communities felt their wellbeing had improved thanks to taking part, and we also saw more positive perceptions of wildlife, a decline in illegal hunting in the protected area, and an increase in detections of our target species – the Visayan warty pig! 🌳 But our work in Panay doesn't end here… We're continuing to work with PhilinCon to protect biodiversity in the area, and are starting three new projects: 1. Understanding how Indigenous communities use the forest to inform conservation strategies in the area – funded by the Woodspring Trust. 2. Conducting surveys of Negros bleeding-heart doves, to investigate their distribution and behaviour and inform conservation breeding and reintroductions – funded by the Oriental Bird Club. 3. Investigating crop foraging by the Visayan warty pig, to better understand the issue and inform mitigation strategies – funded by the Asian Species Action Partnership. In a world's first, Parque das Aves successfully bred the blue-eyed ground dove, a Critically Endangered species only found in Brazil that was once thought to be extinct, but was rediscovered in 2015. 🕊️ Parque das Aves currently houses six blue-eyed ground doves, including two breeding pairs. Only 20 individuals have been confirmed to remain in the wild, and therefore the ex-situ population is key for future interventions to reintroduce and/or reinforce populations of this species in the wild.
