We congratulate Fatemeh Dashti on the successful defence of her doctoral thesis "A refined ground-borne noise prediction methodology for railway traffic in tunnels in bedrock"! ⭐ Fatemeh has developed a detailed prediction model enabling more accurate assessments of ground-borne noise from tunnel-based rail traffic. The model is tailored to Swedish bedrock conditions and provides Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, with a tool for sustainable infrastructure development, balancing efficiency with environmental and human well-being. We congratulate Sjouke Beemsterboer on the successful defence of his doctoral thesis “How does LCA work in sustainable building practices? The case for a pragmatic philosophy of life cycle assessment”! 💡 In his thesis Sjouke explores how environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) is used in real building projects in Swedish building companies. His studies dive into how LCA methods can be simplified, how effective they are in product development, and how companies use LCA in response to legal requirements for building climate declarations. By taking a pragmatic approach, Sjouke Beemsterboer's thesis highlights how flexibility in LCA can be both valid and valuable, helping researchers and practitioners better understand and respond to the real-world challenges of sustainable building. We congratulate Divia Jimenez Encarnacion on the successful defence of her doctoral thesis "Sharing household products for a sustainable environment: A city diagnostic" 🍀 Divia has explored the sharing economy in Gothenburg, Sweden, and identified key factors that influence whether sharing is a truly sustainable choice in comparison to buying new products. Research findings show that the potential to share sustainably varies depending on where people live, who they are, and what items they share, offering practical guidance for cities, organisations and individual consumers to make informed choices and make sharing a tool for environmental sustainability. HAPPY WORLD WATER WEEK! Excited to share my experience as a tenant at the HSB Living Lab, participating in the "Drop it" campaign! It's been incredible to be part of this innovative project, a collaboration between IKEA, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Chalmers University of Technology and Ecoloop AB to test new water-saving solutions in real homes. Thanks you Carin Steschulat Löfqvist, Tobias Svanberg and all team involved. As part of the project, our apartments have been equipped with low-flow taps and smart shower monitors. The goal is to see how we can collectively reduce household water and energy consumption without compromising our daily routines. This initiative is a powerful example of how we can work together to make sustainable living more accessible and contribute to a more water-efficient future. We offer a doctoral student position to explore how urban transformation, circularity, and habitat value can go hand in hand. Do you want to be part of our new research project "Rethinking urban planning and transformation in co-creation: Towards a framework for calculation of habitat value for an equitable, resource efficient, and circular built living environment"? The research seeks to develop knowledge and a methodology on how to better utilize and broaden existing socio-economic calculations in detailed planning and explores how municipalities can improve the design and care of living environment. The long-term goal is to enable structural changes in land use economy within municipal spatial planning to support the transition from a linear to a circular built environment and to shift from new construction to transformation and renovation. I look forward to your application! More information: https://lnkd.in/dNaH_fbr

#chalmersuniversityoftechnology #reductionroadmap #almedalen

Warning signals from electric vehicles at low speeds are intended to alert unprotected road users, such as pedestrians. However, a new study by researchers at ACE shows that one of the most common signal types is very difficult for people to locate, especially when several similar vehicles are moving at the same time. As electric vehicles become increasingly common, this may pose a growing risk. - The requirements placed on car manufacturers relate to detection, or detectability — not to locating the direction of the sound or identifying the number of vehicles involved. However, if you consider a supermarket car park, for example, it’s not inconceivable that several similar car models with the same AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System) signal will be moving simultaneously and in different directions,” says Leon Müller, PhD student at ACE, Chalmers University of Technology. The paper "Auditory localization of multiple stationary electric vehicles" was published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. #ElectricVehicles #TrafficSafety #AVAS #Acoustics #Electromobility Chalmers tekniska högskola
