I am thrilled to have moderated the insightful session on “New Economic Alliances” at the #SG60Conf organised by Institute of Policy Studies, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and Singapore Business Federation supported by Enterprise Singapore. Joined by an exceptional panel of thought leaders: - Dr Indermit Gill (Chief Economist & SVP, Development Economics, The World Bank Group) - Prof Jia Qingguo (Director, Institute for Global Cooperation & Understanding, Peking University) - Mr Chong Meng Tan (Board Director, Temasek & 14th S R Nathan Fellow, IPS) Key takeaways from our discussion: 🌍 Multilateralism Reimagined: Dr Gill unpacked structural gaps in the WTO and championed ASEAN’s flexible, norm-based approach as a model for a fragmented world. ⚖️ New Partnerships & Shifts in Supply Chains: Prof Jia analysed how recent US tariff policies reshaped supply chains, fueling alternative trade partnerships like CPTPP and RCEP and signalling a shift in US-centric economic order. 🔄 Globalisation 2.0: Mr Tan made a compelling case that globalisation is evolving, not dying; calling for trade alliances that embed multipolarity, tech enablement, and climate resilience. The audience Q&A deepened the dialogue on soft norms, institutional reform, and Singapore’s role in fostering interoperable systems amid uncertainty. Grateful for the robust exchange and the collective push for pragmatic, inclusive economic collaboration. #GlobalTrade #EconomicAlliances #Multilateralism #ipssg #sbf #SG60
