MDPI Singapore was established in February 2021, as the Asia-Pacific regional centre of the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), a pioneer publisher that focuses on open access journals. Taking advantage of Singapore as the global business and technology hub, the Singapore office will work closely with our offices in China, Tokyo and Thailand to develop further collaboration with the scientific community in the Asia-Pacific area.

  • Our team had the pleasure of connecting with Dr. Sharon Nai from the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology, A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research. Dr. Nai shared her perspectives on Open Access publishing. Researchers are often encouraged to prioritize journals without APCs and those with strong metrics such as Impact Factor, CiteScore, and citation counts. We highlighted MDPI’s ongoing efforts to communicate the value of Open Access, ensuring visibility, rigorous peer review, and wide accessibility for scholars worldwide. She also noted the importance of efficient article processing times (APT), especially for career progression and timely dissemination of results. Dr. Nai expressed satisfaction with MDPI’s quick turnaround and encouraged expanding the reviewer pool to further strengthen efficiency. We shared MDPI’s flexible review system and commitment to maintaining strong reviewer networks.   • We had an insightful discussion with Dr. Wenqian Chen from the Nanyang Environment & Water Research Institute (NEWRI), Nanyang Technological University Singapore, Guest Editor of Processes MDPI. This was Dr. Chen’s first experience as a Guest Editor with Processes, and she shared that the process was smooth, with clear step-by-step guidelines and strong support from the editorial team. Dr. Chen emphasized the importance of improving the journal’s Impact Factor (IF) and JCR ranking, noting that these metrics play a decisive role in authors’ submission choices. We discussed strategies to boost Special Issue visibility, and we highlighted MDPI’s continued commitment to increasing journal IF and JCR rankings. Looking ahead, Dr. Chen shared valuable insights into emerging research trends and she noted that these areas are likely to shape future directions in the field and open up opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.   • Our team had the pleasure of connecting with Dr. Patricia Wong from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University Singapore, Guest Editor of Mathematics MDPI and Axioms MDPI. Dr. Wong shared constructive feedback on her editorial experience, noting strengths such as the assignment of two to three reviewers per manuscript, which enhances rigorous peer review and contributes to the journals’ academic reputation. She also praised the intuitive SuSy platform, the motivation system for reviewers, and the large, active editorial team. At the same time, she highlighted challenges regarding indexing in databases and suggested ongoing efforts to improve visibility and recognition. We assured her that MDPI continues to prioritize inclusion in major databases and enhance journal discoverability to support editors and authors. Dr. Wong also emphasized the importance of maintaining high-quality reviewer selection criteria, including H-index considerations.     On 21 August 2025, we had the pleasure of hosting an engaging Academic Publishing Workshop at Taylor's University, with participants ranging from undergraduates and PhD students to early-career researchers and faculty members from both Taylor's University and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).   The programme covered essential skills and insights, including: 🔹How to respond effectively to peer review 🔹Writing and structuring an academic paper 🔹Common reasons for rejection at pre-check In the later sessions, we explored AI in academia and held a lively panel discussion on AI in scholarly publishing, offering diverse perspectives on its opportunities and challenges.   We closed the day with an inspiring experience-sharing session by Professor Nyuk Hien Wong from National University of Singapore, who reflected on his publishing journey and shared valuable advice for young researchers.   A heartfelt thank you to all speakers, panelists, and participants for making the workshop a truly enriching exchange of knowledge and ideas! 🌟   #AcademicPublishingWorkshop #PublishingWorkshop #MDPI #MDPISingapore #ScientificPublishing #OpenAccess #UKM #TaylorsUniversity #EarlyCareerResearchers

    Our team enjoyed connecting with Assoc. Prof. Swee Huat Walter Lim from the National University of Singapore, Editorial Board Member in MDPI Literature. He highlighted challenges around Article Processing Charges (APCs) in the literature field, where paying to publish is less common. We were glad to explain MDPI’s Open Access model, which ensures global access to research regardless of funding, and our commitment to transparent communication to build trust among scholars. Prof. Lim suggested thematic calls and interdisciplinary conferences to further engage millennial and Gen Z scholars.   • Our team had the pleasure of connecting with Dr. Bhanu Prakash KN from the Clinical Imaging Research Centre (CIRC), NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and Guest Editor of Applied Sciences MDPI. Dr. Bhanu Prakash shared his experience with MDPI, noting that this was his second time serving as a Guest Editor for a Special Issue—the first being with Sensors MDPI. He reflected on both challenges and positives. He praised the responsiveness of the Editorial Office and the support provided throughout the process, particularly with contributor outreach and invitations. Looking ahead, he suggested that MDPI could enhance the visibility and organization of Guest Editors by creating a dedicated platform that groups them by research area. Such a tool could foster stronger academic connections, encourage collaboration, and highlight editorial initiatives across disciplines and regions. We thank Dr. Bhanu Prakash for his candid feedback and continued collaboration.     Our team had the pleasure of connecting with Dr. Zhongwei Huang from the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and Guest Editor of Nutrients MDPI. Dr. Huang noted that Nutrients holds a strong reputation within the scientific community and shared that his publishing experience has been positive. He provided thoughtful feedback while expressing appreciation for the journal’s efficient editorial processes. He also acknowledged that Article Processing Charges (APCs) can pose challenges in situations with limited funding.
