Today, BMRA has published a new report with Sheffield Hallam University highlighting the impact of potential export restrictions on UK scrap steel currently being considered by government that could devastate the metals recycling industry. The findings show that an export ban to non-OECD countries could cost the UK nearly £5bn in GVA and over 20,000 jobs – threatening the future of a sector that already contributes £9bn annually and employs more than 15,000 people. As the UK steel industry transitions to electric arc furnaces (EAFs), concerns over scrap availability have prompted calls for export restrictions. But the data shows that even under full EAF adoption, the UK would have plenty of scrap steel to ensure domestic supply while also benefitting from exports. With global demand for recycled steel set to soar, now is the time to support – not stifle – this vital industry. About us
The British Metals Recycling Association is the trade association representing the £7 billion UK metal recycling sector - a globally competitive industry supplying environmentally friendly raw material to metals manufacturers. BMRA is run by members for members and gives advice on technical, regulatory, legislative and environmental issues. BMRA’s 300 members trade and process steel, aluminium, copper and most other ferrous and non ferrous metals, and recycle a wide range of related products, such as end of life vehicles, packaging, batteries, domestic appliances, building materials and electronic goods. Together they process over 13 million tonnes - over 95% of the metallic scrap in the UK - every year; and export some 60% of their output to companies throughout the world.
