When you don't have access to clean water, every day is a Labor Day. Walking for water — holiday or not — is a daily reality for 703 million people globally. But thanks to you, the charity: water community, and our local partners around the world, every day we're helping create futures with less time spent collecting water. And more time for the things that matter.

We bring clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries
About us
charity: water is a non-profit bringing clean and safe drinking water to people around the world. Since 2006, we've funded more than 186,000 water projects in 29 countries. When complete, these projects will provide clean, safe drinking water for more than 20.3 million people. 703 million people don’t have access to clean drinking water, that's one in ten of us. Diseases from dirty water kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. The good news: there are simple solutions, from deep drilled wells to water filtration systems. With the help of 2 million+ donors and individual fundraisers, we've raised over $1B for both water and operations, forming a strong force against the water crisis. Join us!

What you can create with #GenerativeAI in 2025 is remarkable. But what’s truly unreal in 2025 is that almost three-quarters of a billion people still don’t have access to clean water. With you — and our partners around the world — we’re working and fighting every day to change that. And that’s what you can see, touch, feel, and even smell at The Experience Lab in #Nashville — an immersive space that brings this work to life. We have plenty of data that directly relate to water solutions — factors like bacteria levels, time saved collecting water, and the long-term sustainability of our work. Now, we’re asking a new set of questions: How does water insecurity feel? To answer this, we worked with our local partner in Nepal to collect data before and after clean water projects were implemented. Today, the results of this research have been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal – and the findings are remarkable. We’ve partnered with Helvetas, Oxfam, Northwestern University, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to advance the Water Insecurity Experiences (WISE) scales. This new set of tools better assess the most common experiences associated with water insecurity and help us understand how access to clean water can alleviate experiences like worry, anger, and shame. Innovation has always been core to charity: water, and we’re proud to help push the sector forward through these new tools, data, and insights. If you want to see smiles, show up in a community the day a new water project is tapped. Talk about pure, unbridled joy — and irrepressible grins. In the past two months, the Smile Generation and PDS Health community has raised $1.95M dollars for clean water. And every penny will be used to help bring clean water to an estimated 48,000 people in Ethiopia. That’s a lot of smiles. A huge, heartfelt thank you to PDS Health, and to those of you who took part in this year’s fundraising campaign. Words fall short in expressing our gratitude, so we’ll let the joy of this moment speak for itself.

We’re humbled again by our friends at Humble Bundle, who are at it again! This community is already bringing clean water to over 307,000 people across 12 countries, but they’re not stopping there. They’re using Brian Michael Bendis' Jinxworld Bundle to help raise more funds to bring clean water to even more people. Check it out at https://cwtr.org/jinxworld

We walked alongside Rusha in rural Bangladesh to understand what life is like without access to clean water. The reality? It’s exhausting. It’s risky. And it robs girls like Rusha of their health, their time, and their future. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. With clean water, everything changes: 💧 Health improves 💧 Time is reclaimed 💧 Girls stay in school—and communities thrive This kind of transformation is powered by The Spring—our community of monthly givers funding clean water projects around the world to help keep girls like Rusha out of the hospital and in the classroom.
