Tomorrow, we are releasing one of the most important & poignant conversations we’ve had on the Construction Sport Podcast. John Houlihan CMIOSH was one of the first people to go up Grenfell post-disaster. Working as the Health and safety Manager for the main scaffolding contractor, he shares the reality of what it meant to work on such a sensitive and tragic site - from the immense pressure of scaffolding logistics, to the lack of support for workers’ mental health and the politics around health & safety and accountability. This isn’t just a story about scaffolding. It’s about how construction workers were treated in the aftermath of Grenfell, what lessons were (and weren’t) learned, and how John has since dedicated himself to improving our industry. Episode out tomorrow at 12pm BST - one you won’t want to miss. ⏰ #Construction #MentalHealth #Grenfell #Scaffolding #ConstructionSport

Welcome to Construction - August 2025 An electrician in his 50s working on a major high pressured Tier 1 construction project in London goes home after work and doesn’t return the next day. Fighting numerous things outside of the workplace including a recent divorce, mixed in with the high mental pressures and high physical demands of construction and what do you get…. Another Construction Suicide. There won’t be any press on the fact another construction worker is gone, there won’t be any tributes left online, it’s unlikely there will be any projects pausing for the loss of this man, but he will become a number that will be discussed in a number of years. As a charity we are only able to do what we do to drive change due the support from our Hundred Club members and campaigns such as #TheLostCity by On The Tools and Get Construction Talking by The B1M. Without the above Construction Sport wouldn’t be here. Meanwhile the leadership of this industry can’t get enough of promoting the big projects they keep on winning. #brokenconstruction

Some charities look good on paper. Construction Sport changes lives in reality. They’ve been there for me in ways I can’t put a price on. During one of the hardest periods of my life personally and professionally they gave me a place to connect, reset, and remember why I love what I do. It’s not just about sport. It’s about getting people talking, breaking down the stigma around mental health, and creating a space where construction workers feel part of something bigger. From site visits to team challenges, from conversations over a coffee to life-saving interventions they show up, every time. That’s the difference they make day in, day out for people across our industry. If you want to support a charity that actually works on the ground, not just in a CSR report, join their Hundred Club. £100 a month. Real lives changed. No tick boxes.
