About us
Lloyd’s Register Foundation is a global safety charity with a mission to Engineer a Safer World. We support research, innovation, and education to make the world a safer place. Building on the Foundation’s partnerships and impact to date, and harnessing over 250 years of maritime safety knowledge, we focus on enhancing the safety of life and property through the development of standards and education. The Foundation has a unique structure. Its income comes from dividends through its own investments, and from Lloyd’s Register Group (LR). As well as financial contributions, the Foundation draws on LR’s knowledge, networks, and expertise to drive more impact through its work. Through our 2024-2029 strategy, we are focusing our resources across three interconnected priority areas: Safer Maritime Systems; Skilled People for Safer Engineering; and Safer, Sustainable Infrastructure. In addition, we also continue to invest in the Foundation’s own assets and expertise which are maritime heritage and safety evidence and insight.

As London International Shipping Week 2025 draws to a close, today’s focus is on how technology is reshaping shipping. Our Digital Transformation in Maritime event, hosted in collaboration with Smart Maritime Network and Safetytech Accelerator, will dive into AI, maritime autonomy and real-world use cases, while spotlighting the UK’s role in driving digital innovation through presentations and panel discussions. Lloyd's Register Foundation and Royal Museums Greenwich are also hosting a panel discussion focused on culture and careers in maritime, and the role heritage can play in supporting a more diverse and sustainable talent pipeline for the industry. As part of The Nautical Institute and WISTA UK 'Opportunities in Maritime' event, Claudene Sharp-Patel, LR's Global Technical Director, and Catherine Logie, Ocean Technologies Group's Director of Certification and Professional Development, will join the panel 'Charting the Course: Future-Ready Skills for the Maritime Industry'. Today (17 September 2025), on Day Three at London International Shipping Week 2025, the Maritime Just Transition Task Force (MJTTF) in collaboration with the United Nations Global Compact, Lloyd's Register Foundation, and Lloyd's Register, took an important step forward in supporting seafarers through the energy transition, launching the first interim training frameworks for seafarers on ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen-fuelled vessels. The event, convened by the UNGC as part of the LR Human Capital Management Forum organised by Ocean Technologies Group and Lloyd's Register OneOcean, opened with a welcome by Kjersti Aass (Head of the MJTTF), followed by Erik Giercksky (Head of Ocean, UNGC), who set the global context by underlining the UN’s role in shaping sustainable shipping. Building on this, Tim Slingsby (Director of Skills & Education, LR Foundation) stressed the need to equip seafarers with the right skills for a just transition. Takeshi Hashimoto (President & CEO, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd.) reinforced the call in his presentation, urging the industry to chart responsible pathways toward alternative fuels. The panel discussions brought together expert perspectives: • Panel 1 – moderated by Natassa Kouvertari (Decarb Hub) – brought together International Maritime Organization's Bingbing Song, International Chamber of Shipping's Arvind Natrajan, International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF)'s Lydia Ferrad, and Takeshi Hashimoto who joined the session following his presentation. Their discussion examined how the frameworks can accelerate safe adoption of zero and near-zero emission fuels while ensuring seafarer voices are central. • Panel 2 – moderated by James Forsdyke (Decarb Hub, Managing Director) – brought in perspectives from Yara Clean Ammonia's Ksenia Zakariyya, Shell's Arul Arunachalam, Nautilus International's Danny McGowan, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping's strategic partner, Matt Dunlop. Their discussion focused on preparing crews, embedding safety, and fostering cross-sector collaboration. The session closed with ITF General Secretary, Stephen Cotton, reminding the industry that people, skills, and safety must remain at the heart of maritime decarbonisation. A big thank you to the UNGC, LR Foundation, and all our partners whose expertise and dedication made this milestone event possible! #LISW25 #MaritimeDecarbonisation #Seafarers #JustTransition #SafetyFirst

At London International Shipping Week 2025 today, the Maritime Just Transition Task Force (MJTTF), in collaboration with the Lloyd's Register Foundation and Lloyd's Register, unveiled the first interim training frameworks for seafarers on ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen-fuelled vessels. These industry-first frameworks provide a global reference point to support harmonised training standards for alternative fuels. Covering both entry-level and senior seafarers, and supported by comprehensive instructor handbooks, they will enable maritime academies to adapt curricula, regulators to shape certification schemes, and companies to update safety systems – helping the workforce prepare for the unique risks of new fuels. Developed with Lloyd's Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub as technical lead and the World Maritime University as academic lead, this milestone builds on the Baseline Training Frameworks for Seafarers in Decarbonisation project, co-funded by the IMO and Lloyd’s Register Foundation. The launch at the Lloyd’s Register Human Capital Management Forum today, convened by the United Nations Global Compact, brought together leaders from across the value chain – including the International Maritime Organization, International Chamber of Shipping, International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF), International Labour Organization, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. Shell, Yara Clean Ammonia, Nautilus International, and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. Panels moderated by the Decarb Hub explored how to embed safety, equity, and resilience in preparing the maritime workforce for future fuels. 👉 Read the press release: https://loom.ly/U0cZeDw #LISW25 #JustTransition #Seafarers #FutureFuels #DecarbHub
