🌍 A recent paper from the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and Systemiq Ltd., 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵: 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘐 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, highlights five areas where #AI can accelerate climate action. The following are three exciting areas of opportunity: 🔹 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 – AI is already optimising grid management, forecasting supply and demand more accurately. DeepMind data shows AI can increase the economic value of wind energy by at least 20%, reducing reliance on costly standby power. 🔹 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘀 – Nearly 50% of emissions reductions needed for net zero will rely on technologies still in prototype. AI’s ability to analyse millions of data points can slash R&D timelines for climate-friendly materials, renewable storage, and alternative proteins. 🔹 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 – The IPCC estimates lifestyle changes could cut 40–70% of emissions by 2050. AI can help overcome conflicting information and weak market signals by providing personalised, data-driven recommendations. But technology alone isn’t enough. As #Systemiq Partner Mattia Romani notes, the demand for AI could grow faster than its climate efficiency gains - unless stronger policy frameworks and standards are put in place. 📖 Explore the full article in UKTN: https://lnkd.in/eTrRfd2b

Africa is bearing the brunt of the climate crisis, despite having done little to cause it. World leaders pledged to double adaptation finance by 2025. Instead, OECD projections show funding could fall 9-17% a year, returning to 2020 levels by 2027. For many across Africa, this feels like a profound betrayal: promises broken while lives and livelihoods are being lost. But the #AfricaClimateSummit has highlighted another side of the story. Entrepreneurs and innovators are building clean energy projects, scaling nature-based solutions, and creating new financial models for adaptation. African policymakers are embedding resilience into economic strategies from the outset - investing in resilience to drive growth, jobs, and competitiveness. Mozambique has secured World Bank support for the $6 billion Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric plant - the largest in southern Africa in 50 years. And the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), led by AfDB and the Global Center on Adaptation, is mobilising blended finance at scale for adaptation. It’s time we amplify the upside of investing in adaptation and the solutions Africans are already delivering. We must keep #adaptation and #resilience firmly on the agenda. Ahead of #COP30, Systemiq Ltd. has released a draft interim report showing how resilience delivers real returns - for people, economies, and business (link in comments).

  • The Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA) and #Systemiq co-hosted a high-level roundtable last week on 𝘜𝘯𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘍𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘳 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘉𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘭, in partnership with the Australian Embassy in Brasília, the The Australia-Brazil Chamber of Commerce - ABCC and Atlas Agro.   At the event, we presented a proposal for a Contract for Difference (CfD) for green fertilisers - a powerful tool to catalyse investment in Brazil’s first wave of low-emission projects.   𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: 🏭 Green fertiliser projects using green hydrogen could already be competitive in Brazil - but volatile market prices make investors hesitate. 💷 A well-structured CfD can provide revenue certainty, unlocking private capital at no long-term cost to counterparties. 🏛️ Supporting CfDs for green fertilisers would be a smarter, more cost-effective way to reduce Brazil’s dependence on imports than subsidising conventional production.   The strong interest from government, finance, and civil society shows real momentum towards making green fertilisers a reality in Brazil.   Huge thanks to Ambassador Sophie Davies and the DFAT team for hosting, our speakers - Petter Østbø, Valeria Noleto, Elbia Gannoum, Rodrigo Santana, Maria Gabriela da Rocha Oliveira, and Jose Carlos Polidoro - and the #Systemiq team, Mathias Becker, Giulia Tonon, Leo Barlach, Beatriz Makssoudian Ferraz, Gustavo Raschke Rameh, and Marc Farre Moutinho for representing #ITA. We’re also grateful to our partners at the Green Hydrogen Organisation - GH2 and MDIC for their continued support. #GreenFertiliser #GreenHydrogen #Brazil

Last week, the Australian Embassy in Brasilia, the The Australia-Brazil Chamber of Commerce - ABCC, Atlas Agro, and the Industrial Transition Accelerator had the pleasure of co-organising a roundtable on “Unlocking Investment in Green Fertiliser in Brazil”. With #COP30 taking place in #Brazil in just a couple of months, the discussion was a timely one. Nitrogen fertilisers account for 2% of global emissions but constitute a vital input for agriculture, a sector of particular importance to Brazil, representing 24% of its national economy. Reducing emissions from fertiliser production and use presents a challenge, but also a green economic opportunity. Against this backdrop, Sophie Davies, Australian Ambassador to Brazil, opened the roundtable, and was followed by an excellent lineup of speakers touching on a number of key issues. Valeria Noleto, from the ABCC, and Elbia Gannoum, of ABEEólica - Associação Brasileira de Energia Eólica Onshore e Offshore e Novas Tecnologias and COP30 Special Envoy for Energy, highlighted green fertiliser as a prime example of the type of solutions that COP30 should bring to the table. Petter Østbø and Rodrigo Santana from Atlas Agro, showcased their Uberaba Green Fertiliser project in Brazil as a flagship example seeking to produce low-emissions fertiliser from green hydrogen at commercial-scale. Mathias Becker, from Systemiq Ltd., spoke on behalf of the ITA about the financing challenges facing green fertiliser projects and how proven but innovative solutions such as revenue certainty mechanisms could be applied to mitigate risk and unlock investment. After an insightful discussion moderated by Maria Gabriela da Rocha Oliveira from Atlas Agro, closing remarks were given by Jose Carlos Polidoro from Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) about the contribution that green fertiliser could make to the country’s strategic goals. Brazil today is dependent on imports of fossil fuel-based fertiliser, for up to as much as 95% of its nitrogen fertiliser needs, so domestic green production offers a compelling solution to reduce its import dependency and the associated economic and environmental risks. Our heartfelt thanks to the Embassy for hosting the event, our colleague and Brazil lead, Marc Farre Moutinho, our co-organisers, the attendees, and to our partners at Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services (MDIC) for their continued support. The ITA looks forward to continuing our collective efforts to make #greenfertiliser a reality in Brazil and beyond.

  • 🌍 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱.   From now until the end of the year, every piece of plastic waste we generate will exceed the world’s capacity to manage it. This year alone, 𝟮𝟮𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 will be produced, with nearly 𝟴𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 living in regions already beyond their waste management limits.   This is not a challenge we can solve through recycling alone. Tackling plastic pollution effectively requires both downstream and upstream solutions:   This is why, at #Systemiq, we work across a range of interventions, including:   ♻️ 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺: In 2017, together with Borealis, we founded Project STOP in Indonesia to create effective circular waste management systems at scale in high-need areas of Southeast Asia. This includes achieving zero waste leakage, increasing recycling, creating new jobs and reducing the harmful impact of mismanaged waste on public health, economy, environment, climate change and biodiversity.    🔄 𝗨𝗽𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺: With EA - Earth Action, we are building the 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗛𝘂𝗯 - a global platform providing best-in-class data to help companies, governments and investors cut plastic use, improve recyclability, and reduce risk.   Plastic Overshoot Day is a stark reminder of the scale of the challenge - but also of the urgent need for system-wide solutions.   👉 Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/ebVU-GCt #PlasticOvershootDay #CircularEconomy #WasteManagement #SystemChange #Sustainability
