Chikwawa faces extreme weather: from severe droughts to heavy floods, affecting food security for millions. Yet women like Gloria and Angella are leading the response diversifying crops, managing village disaster committees, and strengthening community preparedness. ✊🏼 [UPDATE] On 16 July, the Equality Collective presented at this year's Southern African Law Teachers' Conference (SALTC) hosted by the University Of Pretoria, Faculty of Law between 13 to 18 July. The conference's theme was: "Reflections on constitutional supremacy in Southern Africa", bringing together academics, practitioners, and advocates to interrogate law's role in transforming lives. Our Research & Advocacy Officer, Tinotenda Muringani, delivered a thought-provoking presentation highlighting critical insights into how grassroots activism, collective participation in democratic processes, and legal frameworks intersect and support each other. Last week, our friends at Forest Peoples Programme, Peace Brigades International UK, and frontline leaders have launched a powerful new position paper. Co-authored by Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and local community voices from Peru, Liberia, Colombia, and Indonesia, it calls on the UK Government to adopt a Business, Human Rights and Environment Act . The paper outlines key steps to shift power, enable justice, and protect collective rights.
A new position paper, co-authored by Indigenous, Afro-descendant, local community and civil society leaders, calls on the UK Government to step up efforts to protect their human rights and the environments they steward. ‘Protecting and Realising the Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant peoples and local communities in the context of business and human rights’ brings together perspectives from diverse contexts including the Wampís Nation (Peru), Liberia, Colombia and Indonesia. The position paper supports calls by UK civil society for a ‘Business, Human Rights and Environment Act’. The co-authors call on the UK Government to introduce such a law, in line with the key principles the position paper sets out. These key principles are based on measures that would: ➡️ help shift unequal power dynamics, such as being recognised as landowners with decision-making powers, and ➡️ enable justice and remedy. The authors highlight the types of human rights and environmental harms they have experienced, the difficulties they have had when trying to hold business enterprises to account, and the barriers they have faced in achieving justice and remedy. Although they come from different parts of the world, there are many similarities in the challenges they have confronted. As well as calling for a UK corporate accountability law, the position paper lays out a holistic set of recommendations to the UK Government that, including to: 🔹 Recognise and publicly support the collective human rights of indigenous peoples, Afro-descendant peoples and local communities. 🔹 Make the direct funding of such groups a priority for the UK’s #ODA. 🔹 Use diplomacy to support the protection of human rights. 🔗 Read the Position Paper: https://lnkd.in/dmtYE7NV The development of these collective positions took place in-person in November 2024 with Forest Peoples Programme and Peace Brigades International UK. #BizHumanRights #CorporateAccountability #IndigenousRights #RuleofLaw #PeopleOverProfit #ForPeopleAndNature #Peru #Liberia #Colombia #Indonesia Wilhemina Boahemaa Owusu Beyan TuK Indonesia Zero Tolerance Initiative Rights and Resources Initiative Rights Lab, University of Nottingham Corporate Justice Coalition Business & Human Rights Resource Centre Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust The David and Lucile Packard Foundation Ford Foundation Wellspring Philanthropic Fund Climate and Land Use Alliance UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights
