How can social enterprises adopt circular economy principles to reduce waste and increase social value?

The circular economy is an economic model that aims to minimize waste by reusing, recycling, and regenerating products and materials. It contrasts with the traditional linear economy, which follows a "take, make, dispose" pattern. Circular economies prioritize sustainability, resource efficiency, and eco-friendly solutions.

The circular economy is relevant for all enterprises, at least all those interested in combatting climate change and undoing the waste in our economies. To me, the question isn't why is it relevant, but rather what can we do to help facilitate the necessary transition?

The circular economy (CE) is relevant for social enterprises (SEs) because it provides insights into how to efficiently organize for social impact. It emphasizes moving away from resource-intensive traditional entrepreneurship and shows that social, economic, and environmental value can be achieved using alternative resources that are often easily accessible. The CE also provides SEs with an opportunity to leverage their local connections and agility to access community resources and innovate in ways that traditional linear organizations cannot. Additionally, the increasing focus on the CE to achieve the SDGs creates opportunities for SEs to collaborate with large organizations pursuing similar objectives, enhancing their collective impact.

Social enterprises, which are mission-driven organizations, are uniquely positioned to benefit from circular economy principles. For them, adopting circularity can: Reduce operational costs by optimizing resource usage. Align with their social and environmental missions by reducing environmental impacts. Create new economic opportunities, such as upcycling or repair services, which can engage local communities or marginalized groups. Improve brand reputation, fostering stronger relationships with eco-conscious consumers and partners.

For a social enterprise, the first step isn't to assess circular potential or evaluate existing linear practices, but rather to examine a social problem of interest to identify potential resource inefficiency issues. Following this, the focus should shift to defining a vision where the specific social problem is addressed, incorporating circular economy principles into the methodology where resource inefficiencies exist.

Social enterprises can adopt circular economy principles in several ways: Design for longevity: Create products that are durable, repairable, and reusable to avoid waste generation. Utilize waste as a resource: Turn waste materials into valuable products through upcycling or recycling. For instance, transforming discarded fabrics into new products or using surplus food in community programs. Engage in product life extension models: Provide services such as repair, remanufacturing, or sharing, reducing the need for new product creation. Educate and empower communities: Train people in recycling or upcycling skills, generating social value by promoting employment and sustainable practices.

Examples include: Elvis & Kresse: A UK-based social enterprise that upcycles decommissioned fire hoses into luxury accessories while donating a portion of profits to charities. IVillage (India): Focuses on eco-friendly cotton bags, creating sustainable products while empowering rural women. Fairphone (Netherlands): Produces ethical smartphones with easily replaceable parts, extending their lifespan and reducing e-waste.

Challenges: Funding: Gaining capital for novel, unproven models is difficult. Scaling: Increasing reach without compromising sustainability is complex. Consumer Habits: Shifting people towards unconventional products/services is challenging. Supply Chains: Building circular networks requires intense coordination. Regulation: Existing laws may not always favor circular approaches. Opportunities: Innovation: Eco-friendly solutions lure investors and consumers. Job Creation: New eco-markets stimulate employment. By integrating circular principles, social enterprises can contribute to a sustainable future while enhancing social impact.

I would also like to highlight the reciprocal relationship between SEs and the CE. While the CE helps illuminate the 'how' for SEs — how to organize for social impact — SEs contribute to the 'why' for the CE. They emphasize the importance of the social dimension of sustainability, which is often overlooked in CE approaches. While debates persist concerning the linear economy's impact on nature, it's acknowledged that this impact directly affects people. Hence, I argue that prioritizing matters affecting people in CE dialogues should be non-negotiable if the commitments to sustainability transformation is genuine.
