To do this, trend analysis using historical data can identify patterns or trends in your capacity demand or supply. Scenario analysis can estimate the impact of different events or factors on your capacity demand or supply. Additionally, modeling and simulation using mathematical models or software tools can simulate the behavior or performance of your capacity demand or supply under different conditions or assumptions.

In order to effectively manage capacity, it’s necessary to compare current and future capacity, and identify any gaps or issues that may hinder service delivery or business outcomes. Solutions to address these gaps or issues can include increasing or decreasing resource capacity by adding, removing, or upgrading hardware, software, network, or staff. Optimizing or improving resource capacity by enhancing, tuning, or reconfiguring the same resources is also beneficial. Additionally, balancing or allocating resource capacity by distributing, sharing, or prioritizing resources among different services, customers, and locations can help. Controlling or reducing demand by influencing, managing, or limiting the demand for services from customers and stakeholders is also important. To ensure successful capacity management, it’s essential to monitor and review on a regular basis and adjust solutions as needed. Furthermore, communication and collaboration with stakeholders such as customers, suppliers, and managers should be maintained in order to meet their expectations and requirements.

In complex agile settings, where projects and programs have interdependencies, it's vital to coordinate efforts using a common tool - typically a PPM tool. Additionally, ensure that your capacity management is in line with strategic and operational goals and plans. Involve stakeholders in activities and decisions for capacity management. Finally, assess and improve your capacity management performance and maturity on an ongoing basis.
