I believe empowerment comes from clear communication and understanding. Therefore, we delineate the vision and purpose of our digital transformation, demonstrating its alignment with our mission, values, and goals. I am a fan of Simon Sinek‘s golden circle. The different abstraction levels of WHY, HOW and WHAT already help to describe and define the most relevant dimensions of a value and KPIs Framework. Especially the answer to the WHY is really often missed. You find HOW and What explanations, guidelines and targets broken down in almost every corporation. But you rarely see organizations with a clearly described WHY. On the one hand it’s astonishing because the WHY easily helps to explain WHY everything else is important - it gives a purpose. But when you start outlining the WHY, you will recognize how hard it is. But I can really encourage every management team of an organization to take time to clearly work out and write down the WHY.

In a world where adaptability is key, digital transformation is not merely a trend but a survival necessity. It's not just about technology adoption but a complete overhaul of our work culture to resonate with our mission, values, and objectives. This monumental shift will only prosper if every employee comprehends its significance. Biggest resistance to change envisioned by a digital transformation comes from employees who feel a loss of control coming from having to change how they work. Resistance to change can mean adoption challenges and failure of the initiative. Hence early engagement with all stakeholders not just the senior leaders is key to getting buy-in. I’ve found design thinking led user journey mapping, workshops where end users are listened to and get an opportunity to understand the need for change and contribute to as a great way to drive acceptance and momentum for digital transformation

Co-creating with your team is essential to achieving the best outcomes. As the saying goes '2 heads are better than 1'. When faced with digital transformation, 10 heads is better than 2. By involving more people in planning, testing, and execution, you'll be better able to vet your idea and you'll improve the clarity of your goal through refinement. You'll also reduce friction, by having more people able to act against that goal. Involving others will help your idea sweep throughout the team/division/company, without having to run yourself ragged.

We implemented OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) for our management team to measure our success. While the guard rails are influenced by corporate targets, we add the objectives we want to achieve with and for our team. Of course it’s essential to regularly measure the progress of the level of achievement to able to adapt the OKRs or the way we approach them. The great thing about OKRs is that they allow teams to freely define the best way for them to approach the OKRs. This freedom allows to bring in individual strengths, point of views and approaches wich is a key to leverage capabilities of a diverse team. At the same time it’s a good tool for the management to prevent micromanagement.

I agree, though for me this is more than mere involvement. Employees should be leading the selection of the solutions to be implemented as well as lead their design. I have seen many organisation applying top-down approach, which might yield some results but would not lead to have properly embedded business solutions. Stated differently, this should be driven by the business for the business, with the technology group acting as a (challenging) partner.

A robust and accessible training and development program helps to empower and inspire employees to become part of the digital transformation solution. Implementing solutions that are not clearly established among employees is problematic on many levels but investing in training to grow internal alignment is always a great idea. For every dollar spent on digital transformation solutions, should include investment in training and education about the solution.

As Winston Churchill said: “I am always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught.” —> of course it’s good to have internal academies, a full catalog of all kinds of trainings. But we still need to take the time to review what kind of training someone really 1) needs 2) intrinsically wants to do! 1) of course needs to be addressed but take time to see if it maybe needs to be a classroom training and maybe even something out of your large training catalog. 2) Of course in a market oriented company you cannot allow everything but whenever you can effort it, let the people train what they intrinsically want. In most of the cases they will pay it back and maybe it creates totally new opportunities or innovations.

So give your team but also yourself the room and ability to not stop learning 📚🚀

Agreed. Some best practice include establishing internal "academies". It's is also critical to properly define the scope and how "transformative" this journey will be. For example, how will you educate your staff on the new ways of managing data in a digital world? How will you repurpose your tech architecture employees when they become "obsolete" which is likely to happen if you go for full digitalisation / cloud adoption?

Allow failure and even encourage it! Some companies go as far as allocating a failure rate as a measurement KPI for the program’s success. This way a bigger volume of innovation and POCs spring up internally and are driven by teams not hindered by a potential dead end too early on.

Be transparent and WALK THE TALK. What it usually valued is to share your personal objectives transparently with your teams. Communicate regularly in general and especially value, appreciate and celebrate success. Be also transparent about failures and share learnings for the future. Only companies with a learning culture that tolerates failure is able to learn and grow. Only by this, you can really empower your team members to be brav enough to come up with innovative and out of the box ideas.

Answer the question whats-in-for-them. The more WIN-WIN situation you can create the better the transformation can happen. Understanding where your stakeholder groups are coming from is key in taking them onto your journey.

This approach helped to break down barriers to adoption and encouraged the team to explore the digital tools more openly. It's about showing that you're not just a leader from afar, but an active participant in the change process.

WALK THE TALK - so easily said but rarely done. Especially in scenario’s with a lot of change, like in a digital transformation, it’s for many managers easy to give and expect a certain changed direction. But to really consequentially follow it yourself and challenge your self every day, if you really LIVE the changes, requires a lot of energy. But if you believe in WHY you (need to) “transform”, it’s the path you have to take…

As leaders, it is imperative that we encourage our teams to take ownership and innovate. To truly empower our employees, we must let go of traditional hierarchies and foster an environment that allows for creativity. By giving individuals the freedom to experiment, take risks, and make decisions, we unlock their full potential. Although there may be plenty of ideas, it is essential to encourage a culture of 'try fast, fail fast.' Along the way, we may stumble upon that one transformative idea that reshapes our industry.

Walk the talk. As simple as that and far easier said than done. If you want your teams to go the extra mile, start with your self. If you want them to think out of the box, let them the freedom to do so and stay open yourself challenge your self on your views

Switching from Physical to Digital is NOT akin to changing your wardrobe, just because something went out of style Changing a mode of communication is a very fundamental shift, at a neural network level I’m reminded of Author John Holt’s books : How Children Learn and How Children Fail. Some learn through games and experiments, while some through physically holding a book. In my view, Physical AND Digital will continue to co-exist for a long time to come. And if the debate arises about cutting more trees to make paper for books, thats easily solve-able. But will keep that for another conversation/ discussion!

Something at the start to be seriously consider - listen to your people for challenges they face, aspirations they have and work that energizes them. Co-creating a vision with them will work much better than a leader coming up with the vision as passing it on for implementation. It takes time and effort but the upside is tremendous.

A term I just learned from Tina Müller is to “work more on the system rather than inside the system”. Too often it’s way easier to just work inside the system, do the things you can do perfect and where you feel comfortable. But if you want to innovate, grow, transform, you need to work on the system.
