One of the first things to understand is that Artificial Intelligence (Ai) is not the same as robotics. There are may processes in manufacturing that have been, or in the near future will be robotized (automated). It is a mistake, however, to lump them in with far fewer aspects of manufacturing that are susceptible to being taken over by Ai. It is also important to demand strict proof of concept when it comes to Ai in manufacturing processes, because not even a highly successful CRM system, powered by Ai, can be used as a model for self-learning manufacturing. The bottom line is understand precisely what Ai is and what it isn't.

2 Assess your needs

Before you invest in AI solutions, you need to identify your business goals, challenges, and opportunities. What are the pain points and gaps in your current operations? What are the areas where you can improve your performance and competitiveness? What are the customer expectations and market trends that you need to meet or anticipate? Always strive to keep Ai in perspective, notwithstanding the marketing hype that attends it. Be careful of turning control over to any given instantiation of Ai, until the system has been parallel tested with your standard operating procedures and well proven. And keep in mind that with computer software implementations, he who pays completely before the implementation is full, complete, and thoroughly tested (way past the Beta stage), inevitably ends up paying again and again to complete a system that was not ready when it was delivered. Always have a payment hold-back in the contract pending final proof of a complete and successful implementation.
