What are the best practices for selecting KPIs that align with your organization's culture and values?

In some organizations, linking targets to compensation might not be a good idea in the first place.

Bueno en algún tiempo realizaba el uso de dashboard en los tv, correos, intranet, y demás medios de divulgación de la empresa, añadiendo imágenes que llamaran la atención del colaborador o una actividad tipo sopa de letras, crucigramas, también en el momento de iniciar una reunión, empleando el voz a voz. ☺️ Es claro que la dinámica cambia según el público y tipo de KPI a divulgar.

KPIs should address the following : 1) Be reflective of what the customers, partners and employees seek and expect from the organisation. It is very important to have an “outside-in” perspective when developing KPIs 2) Be a medium to drive collaboration and interdependency between functions, so that every function contributes to the success of another. Siloed KPIs drive little impact. 3) Be linked to performance measurement and incentives. Many organisations come up with KPIs that get reported but have no consequence on performance ratings or compensation actions. 4) Transparency and organisation-wide awareness of how the company is collectively doing on these KPIs, with the C-suite owning actions related to improving performance.

What I found to be helpful is that even before setting KPIs, one should first establish the Critical Success factors (CSF) which will inform as to what is need in order for the orgnaisation to achieve its desired outcome. Having undertood the CSFs, the KPI should then be aligned. This will ensure that the what gets measured is what really moves the business success. The common mistake I have seen with most organizations is to confuse performance indicators with KPIs. This results in spending a lot of time of things that really do not move the needle
