What are effective ways to integrate AR into multiplayer games?

Effectively integrating AR into multiplayer games begins with designing game mechanics and features tailored for AR platforms. This involves leveraging AR's unique capabilities, such as using the real world as a dynamic canvas, or overlaying virtual elements in real-world settings. Additionally, AR can enhance the social and collaborative dimensions of gaming with features like custom avatars and interactive gestures, or interactive puzzles that players return to and engage with over time, adding a layer of ongoing discovery and problem-solving. When making AR multiplayer games, using what AR devices can do well is essential. This means mixing real-world settings with game elements, like in Pokemon Go and Minecraft Earth, and making it more social with character creation and talking features.

For game developers, it's essential to consider the technical challenges such as ensuring a seamless AR experience across different devices, maintaining user safety in the real world, and dealing with the variability of outdoor environments. Balancing gameplay to prevent AR from becoming a gimmick and instead using it to genuinely enhance the multiplayer experience is also crucial.

Both physical (i.e. walking space, sunlight and glare, reflexes) and digital (i.e. hologram size, interaction hotspots, accessibility) affect it. Also, designing for headset-based devices is very different, i.e. gestures can be thrown into the UX/UI mechanics.

With AR, we can include gamification activities such as Treasure Hunts, in a collaborative space, with voice, chat and video integration for multiplayer. We can create challenging activities in the real world and update the progress on a common dashboard. However, it is important to provide instructions for a safe environment to avoid accidents. There are plugins like Photons, Agora, and many others that we can explore.

Designing AR experiences, especially in games, demands high customization for a decent quality. The game must adapt to various physical environments, which affects the storytelling and gameplay. In multiplayer, this is crucial, but very complex in development. The mechanics should scale with the different spaces, where one is able to play it.

In the design stage, it's also very important to account for the physical environment. If part of an event, players may be sharing the same space, which would need to be accounted for in terms of both game and activation design.

The Niantic Lightship SDK would be a great place to start for developing Shared AR and Multiplayer Experiences. The SDK has many examples that integrate the most popular AR features i.e meshing, semantics etc, into a multiplayer experience.

Imagine the David vs Goliath scenario when level 2 meets level 8 in the same zone. The onslaught will be positively evil! Don't. Solution : Let AI figure a different carrot for each to collaborate rather than compete. Hence, it is players vs AI when a team cannot be formed at instancing. Preloads can prioritise for structures than textures, for example, so gameplay is not hindered by ghosting. We layer textures so bandwidth gives gameplay first dibs. Our perception of something is often based on past experiences, and this is especially true for user interfaces. We're accustomed to navigating two-dimensional interfaces like websites and smartphone apps, and we naturally expect similar ease of use in three-dimensional applications. In this transitional time/phase, it's wise to align AR interfaces with the familiar design principles of 2D interfaces, as seen already in applications from Apple or Meta. Only after this familiarization can we explore unique, context-sensitive, and adaptable UI and UX concepts. This approach guides new users through special spatial experiences and makes it possible to think of establishing new interaction patterns.

While making my AR Ludo multi-player game concept, the main challenge I faced was to get a real smooth webAR experience for the users while Keeping the UI, intuitive and legible. This challenge resulted in having a 2D, traditional HTML ui than a spacial UI for ease of transition from traditional web experience to an AR experience for the users. Since it's a turn based game, i used google firebase real time database to communicate between players and sync their positions and turns.

Although AR glasses may not be financially accessible to many, most smartphones now possess AR capabilities. Therefore, ensuring cross-platform compatibility between various AR devices can significantly enhance the user experience. More players mean more fun, after all!

We have recently starting running a Techno Sport called HADO which is the world's first augmented reality sport that combines physical and digital gameplay, played all over the world. All players wear an HADO headset and wrist sensor that capture the players movements in the real world, which directly correspond to input in the game. Two teams compete against each other on a 10x6m court, with a halfway line separating both teams. We also have leagues where teams get promoted and relegated. You even have the chance to represent your country to play in tournaments all over the World.
