I talk about Generative AI tools. I’ve found that the best way to approach it is to start with the basics. By learning the fundamentals and experimenting with popular tools, I’ve been able to unlock new creative possibilities. Staying updated on the latest trends and connecting with other designers has been invaluable in expanding my knowledge and skills. Collaborating with younger designers who are more tech-savvy has also been a game-changer, as it has pushed me to think outside the box and embrace new approaches to design.

To master cutting-edge design software as an expert in traditional architectural methods, start by exploring online courses tailored to architects, focusing on programs like BIM, Revit, and Rhino. Practice daily, beginning with small projects to build familiarity and gradually integrating software into more complex designs. Participate in workshops or forums to connect with peers and learn best practices. Applying gamification, such as setting personal challenges or joining design hackathons, can make learning engaging and structured. By combining your traditional expertise with these digital tools, you’ll bridge the gap and enhance both precision and creativity in your work.

Consider how profitable it is for you to invest yourself in mastering cutting-edge design tools. As a senior professional, your skills are typically beyond the entry-level applications of software—where routine tasks like drafting are performed, which don’t fully utilize the expertise of a senior. Advanced software skills that are profitable for seniors do exist, but they are often challenging to acquire, have lots of competition, and may require a foundational understanding of programming—essentially, an entirely separate discipline. Instead, it might be more viable to reframe your expertise in a way that allows you to mentor junior staff and take on more administrative roles, such as client management and design definition.
