They are used to show the likelihood that a conclusion drawn from known premises is true. -Abductive reasoning typically begins with an incomplete set of observations and proceeds to the likeliest possible explanation for the set. Abductive reasoning yields the kind of daily decision-making that does its best with the information at hand.

Correlation is a measure of the association of two variables, but it may not always be what you are looking for. Often, you are interested in the association between variables after adjusting for other variables known to influence one or both variables of interest. In this case, you'll want to look at partial correlations which can sometimes untangle intricate relationships that do not stand out when just considering pairwise correlations.

Correlation quantifies the connection between variables, with values between -1 and 1. Take, for instance, studying hours and exam scores; a positive correlation suggests that more study time typically results in higher scores. Conversely, a negative correlation might occur between smoking and lung health, where increased smoking correlates with decreased lung function. Yet, correlation alone doesn't establish causation. For example, while there's a correlation between ice cream sales and drowning incidents, it's not because ice cream causes drowning; rather, both tend to increase in warmer weather.

In the setting of causal graphical models, inferring the causal structure of a dataset becomes a model selection problem. In general, this is a difficult problem, but knowledge of the experimental design or structures in the data may help guide the model selection.

In health care, demonstrating causation for an intervention requires ruling out potential confounders. To be a confounder, a variable must be associated with both the intervention and the outcome. A common way to address confounding is to conduct a randomized controlled trial. If the intervention is selected at random, any association between the intervention and any other measured or unmeasured variable must be random as well. Randomization is not always possible, so a great deal of effort has been put in to develop methodologies that can account for confounders. Unfortunately, it is only possible to account for measured confounders. Unmeasured/unknown confounders make causation very difficult to prove in the observational study setting.

Randomization is the key approach for enabling causal conclusions. By randomly assigning experimental subjects (participants, experimental animals, etc.) to different groups, you ensure that observed group differences are likely due to the treatment and not pre-existing differences between groups. Combined with prespecified analyses, randomization enhances the validity of experiments, strengthening the reliability of causal claims.
