Facing resource distribution challenges during a disaster requires logistical planning. Key to this is thorough preparation, a critical yet costly investment. However, consider this: "If you think emergency preparedness is expensive, try disaster." Without adequate preparedness, it's nearly impossible to establish infrastructure on-the-fly when disaster strikes. Preparation involves building resilient supply chains, stockpiling essential resources, and training personnel to ensure swift, efficient logistics. By prioritizing these strategies, organizations can effectively manage resource distribution, avoiding the chaos that unpreparedness can bring. Investing in preparedness is essential to overcoming logistical challenges in emergencies.

Activate the Logistics and Finance and Administration functions immediately and include resources who are well trained and prepared to act in these functions. Activities such as staging, tracking, contacting and pre-established relationships with suppliers will help towards a more streamlined, efficient and economical response.

It's imperative to understand what are your capabilities for all types of disasters in order to be efficient in preparing, responding, recovering and mitigating them. So many times we throw the kitchen sink at disasters and think that will be enough. Capabilities assessments along with good strategic planning will help in mitigating logistical nightmares.

Frequently overlooked but, a critical element in the effective completion of those efforts listed below is communication. Especially during an event if all involved are not on the same method/frequencies of communication. There are multiple examples of failure due to lack of common communication method(s) with all agencies involved.. - Establish a centralized command center to streamline decision-making and resource allocation. - Implement real-time tracking systems for supply monitoring and quick rerouting as needed. - Cultivate local partnerships to expedite distribution and leverage community networks. Communication: Pre - During - Post = insight into future event planning..

Over preparing is not wrong for emergencies. Using community resources is vital, get those services on contract. Let them use your name in advertising! It’s a bargain.

Removal of an over politicised process focusing on community needs and early engagement with the same community to better understand their needs will enable response and recovery agencies to enhance logistical capability as part of a planning phase rather than as an output of response

Something I’ve found recently is that we tend to classify a disaster as reasonably routine. My thoughts are to challenge what we could consider a disaster in both operations as well as external forces. To challenge the disaster scenario and response always opens new avenues of consideration, and can ultimately strengthen any response technique. Logistically, calm influence will always produce the better outcome in my experience.
