How can cross-functional collaborations build a positive organizational culture?

Cross-functional collaborations bring a wide range of subject matter experts together to swarm a problem space and create the best possible solution. Working in a cross-functional environment is not easy; there will be lots of decisions and debates when it comes to learning how to work as a team. What's most important is ensuring team members have an inclusive mindset. Meaning, everyone should feel safe to express their perspective, even if people disagree with it. The best advice I can give anyone entering a cross-functional team environment is to make sure you over-communicate and build trust within the team. When cross-functional teams lack clear communication and trust, it usually shows up in team morale and can stifle collaboration.

Collaboration between accounting and finance teams is crucial. Accountants deal with the past, while finance teams plan for the future. Together, they make sure that financial goals match the company's overall plans, which boosts innovation, quality, and efficiency. This partnership has a big impact on the whole organization, leading to growth, happy customers, and engaged employees. In the orchestra of success, the accounting and finance teams play a vital role.

In order to reach optimal benefits on innovation, it is key to embed agile practice in an organization. An agile team is a cross-functional team that shares common goal in mind. The expertise of the different functions can contribute timely on innovative experimentation and implementation throughout a product life cycle.

Sometimes, it slips our minds to update our cross-functional partners on our work, especially in fast-paced environments. To tackle this, establishing a cadence for discussions with collaborators can help. Issues in collaborations can also stem from not understanding different cultures or not having the right tools to resolve conflicts. Emotional intelligence, which is about handling emotions well, is a must for creating a smooth and fruitful collaboration.

Senior leadership needs to embrace the agile organizational design, trust to delegate accountability to the cross-functional team, and support the autonomy self-organized Agile team operations to be free from the hierarchical decision baggage. That way, the team engagement will be higher, bond within the agile team is stronger, communication is clearer, collaborations is more effective.

The most successful (& fun!) cross-functional collaboration I've experienced had 3 key ingredients: 1. A shared, hard-to-reach goal: We set a SMART goal that drove top-line and bottom-line improvements impacting each team's P&Ls. Everyone was clear & motivated about what we needed to achieve. 2. Check-ins early, often, & publicly: From the kickoff, bi-weekly demos, and email reporting, we created consistent access and transparency for all who wanted in. People prioritized it. 3. Clear, celebrated roles for each team and leader: We designated an overall captain, but each team was elevated at different moments based on subject matter expertise & project progress. People and their roles were respected at every level.

Fostering a culture of cross-functional collaboration within your organization is like supervising kids in a sandbox. But you allow yourself to be the playful kid as well. As the leader, you suggest an outline of the rules for play, create an enticing vision, and select the right 'sandbox kids' based on their unique abilities. Provide the necessary tools (resources like training and incentives) and encourage open communication, just as children use various methods to collaborate. Mediate the conflict between sales and marketing now and then. Periodically observe and celebrate successes while learning from setbacks. A collaborative culture, where diverse perspectives are valued, creates engaging workplaces and innovative companies.

Cross-functional mentoring and networking allow exposure to diverse perspectives that often lead to innovation and fresh ideas. Having the right people at the table leads to skill and knowledge development and personal growth. By working closely with individuals from different functions, you better understand how your organization operates. This holistic view can help you make more informed decisions and be more effective, not to mention the career opportunities that may be introduced while gaining access to resources, knowledge, and information you wouldn't otherwise have. It's essential to approach these interactions with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a genuine interest in building meaningful connections with others.

Participating is a cross-functional project is a great way to meet others outside your usual work area. This is how I went from project management (process improvements) into HR! I met a lot of great mentors from so many fields by working in cross-functional teams!
