When you are designing interfaces it can be useful to think in terms of making features similar if you are going to group them amongst different features. The human mind will associate them and pair them in groups intuitively. Also similarly to symmetry make everything as balanced as possible. Closure may be used if you want to create icons where you want the user to fill in the blanks; make use of that negative space. There are other gestalt theories too which may be a useful way to think about UX and UI design outside the norm.
