To break down communication barriers in remote teams, use dependable platforms like Zoom or Slack to create clear lines of communication and define expectations for roles and reaction times. Maintaining an open atmosphere and conducting frequent check-ins are crucial. Use technology to collaborate and manage projects, train people in efficient communication, and keep time zones and cultural differences in mind. Make use of visual aids and video calls to improve comprehension, record everything, and plan online team-building exercises to fortify bonds.

Remote work , a boon, post covid, that has happened worldwide. This opened up crucial breakthrough that people work outside office, be at home or cafes and can work seamlessly without travelling to work (saves time from travel as well) But now I believe, people make use of it, work on other odd jobs during office hours and later presents lame excuses, say poor Internet service providers, for task delivery delays. So, I feel, regular attendance for standup calls is necessary to set the boundaries. The task completed, in progress and target for the day has to be clearly identified there by making sure the overall project deliveries aren’t impacted.

At Squadmakers, we crush communication barriers in remote teams by keeping things chill and clear. We roll in Spanish, so everyone’s on the same page, and we use collaborative tools to stay in sync in real-time. Our responsibility model is crystal clear, with everyone knowing their role. The Product Owner is key in keeping communication smooth with customers, making sure expectations are set and needs are met. Plus, the enabling team mentors the crew (The Squad or MVTT - Minimum Viable Technical Team), so new members get up to speed fast and feel supported. We always make sure no one’s left out and everyone’s on track.

In my experience, communication issues (vague standup updates, slow response to chats or to emails) are often a symptom of deeper problems. Team members tend to go dark when they are overwhelmed. Maybe something is going on in their personal life, maybe they don't understand the technology, or maybe the requirements are unclear/constantly shifting. The easiest way to get a sense for what's going on is to review the team member's git activity. Do they have no checkins at all for long periods? Do they check in code full of commented out debugging code? Do they check in low quality work that doesn't leverage labor saving framework features? These all point to different issues, and they can all be pretty clear from the code.

In today's world, communication has become very easy. I make use of Slack, Zoom and Google Meet to keep all the teams inline. In my specific industry, QA Engineers need to have a very transparent relationship with the developers to ensure the quick resolving of bugs. Slack allows users to chat back and forth at any time of the day. Another thing I enforce is to have daily/weekly scrum meetings, especially when members of the team are unable to clearly explain the issue. Live meetings allow you to put your queries and points across much easily.
