Back to School… AAOS Style! This week, #TeamAAOS prepared for back to school season by heading back to the playground with our Recess-themed event! From friendly games of bags and Jenga to hopscotch, board games, coloring, and sidewalk chalk art, we brought out our inner kids and had a blast connecting with colleagues across the Academy. The day wasn’t just about fun and games. As part of our commitment to giving back to our community, we also collected backpacks and school supplies to support local students and schools in need. Thank you to everyone who participated, donated, and helped bring this nostalgic afternoon to life. Here’s to starting the “school year” with energy, creativity, and community spirit! July is Sarcoma Awareness month! Orthopaedics NorthEast is proud to collaborate with Parkview Health and the Parkview Packnett Family Cancer Institute in providing the regions only dedicated multidisciplinary sarcoma treatment team. We provide multidisciplinary sarcoma care and participate in International multi-center sarcoma clinical trials thanks to the Parkview Mirro Center for Research and Innovation. Our team originally treated this 42 year old female who had a pelvic osteosarcoma over 5 years ago. At that time we discussed amputation (hind quarter amputation) and limb-salvage options. In 2020, She underwent hip joint sparing internal hemipelvectomy with double barrel vascular fibular autograft reconstruction of the pelvis. We were able to preserve her hip joint (1 cm of remaining bone). She required complete resection of her abductor muscles (resulting in Trendelenburg gait/limp), but is able to ambulate without assistive device. You can see on recent CT scans how well the fibula and autograft incorporated into the sacrum and remaining acetabulum. I am honored to apart of our amazing team! Sarcoma Awareness Month may be ending, but the work of the AAOS Musculoskeletal Tumor Registry (#MsTR) continues year-round. MsTR is helping advance care for patients with rare bone and soft tissue tumors by collecting data that supports research, benchmarking and better-informed clinical decisions.
