All too often, patients struggle to get timely access to intensive rehabilitation care. NBC News recently covered the story of John Karadell, who needed inpatient rehabilitation after a stroke but spent more than a month waiting for approval from his insurance plan. This delay meant he was unable to get the level of therapy and medical management he needed to maximize his recovery he would have received in an inpatient rehabilitation hospital. John’s story emphasizes how critical it is to reform the prior authorization process, so that patients can get the rehab care they need, where and when they need it, after an injury or illness.
