What I’ve Learned About Leading People Over 30 Years Story time! When Angie’s List started, it was just me, by myself, trying to do the work day in and day out. Over time, the team grew, but I knew everyone's name, and I was helping to hire a lot of folks on the team. Eventually, we got to the point where I didn’t know everyone's name. That was a hard point for me. How could I really know what was going on within the company? I had heard another leader, I can’t even remember who at this point, talk about holding office hours like a professor. They had time on their calendar every week where people could come, share ideas, give feedback, and more. I stole the idea and implemented it at Angie’s List. It was such a great way for me to stay connected to the larger team at every level as we grew. Today, I’ve taken this approach with our pro community on Angi. Any pro on Angi can schedule time to chat with me. I learn so much about the successes and challenges pros are experiencing running their businesses, learn about what we can improve on Angi, and then share those back with the larger team. It’s been a great tool that I’ve been able to carry with me throughout my career.

5 Things to Ask When Buying a Home Are you in the market for a new home this fall? I wanted to share some of the best tips when buying a home. #1: Make sure you’ve got all of your finances in order and set your budget. Don’t forget about ALL the expenses that go along with buying a home. Down payment, home inspection, maintenance costs, taxes, homeowners association fees, etc. #2: How long will you be able to stay in the home? In this market with these rates, your starter home could become your forever home. In a recent Angi survey, homeowners reported staying in their home 5 years longer than they expected. #3: Location! It’s all about the location; make sure that you truly understand the neighborhoods where you’re looking to buy. Spend time there on weekends and check it out at night. You're better off buying in the location you’d like and making the house work for you, versus being a location far from work, family, school and more. #4: Get an inspection and make sure that you understand it. You really do want to know what you’re getting yourself into. If you’re going to need to redo the roof or replace a furnace, you’ll want to budget that into the cost of the house. #5: Do your research. Understand the homes in the neighborhood you like and get comps on ones that look like something you could be interested in.
