We Are Their Voice.

About us

The ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the first animal welfare organization established in North America and serves as the nation’s leading voice for animals. The organization’s mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. The ASPCA provides local and national leadership in three key areas: protecting and rescuing animals from crisis, assisting animals in communities and advancing legal protection for animals. The ASPCA was founded by Henry Bergh in 1866 on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans, and must be protected under the law. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a full-service animal hospital, spay/neuter clinic, rehabilitation center for canine victims of cruelty, kitten nursery and adoption facility. In addition, the ASPCA announced a groundbreaking anti-cruelty partnership with the New York Police Department in 2013, which has resulted in a record-breaking number of arrests and animals’ lives saved. The ASPCA also operates programs and services that extend nationwide, including a Field Investigation and Response team that rescues animal victims of natural and man-made disasters, a fully-subsidized spay/neuter clinic in Los Angeles, a Behavioral Rehabilitation Center for fearful, under-socialized dogs, and a 24-hour, 365-day Animal Poison Control Center that provides pet owners and veterinarians with live, on-call assistance related to toxic products and substances. In 2015, the ASPCA acquired Humane Alliance, the nation’s leading training and education organization focusing on high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter. The ASPCA is a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization supported by more than 2 million animal advocates across the country.

URGENT: Dog Rescue in North Carolina❗ At the request of the Star Police Department and in collaboration with Montgomery County Animal Services, the ASPCA assisted with the rescue of nearly 20 dogs living on the property of an overwhelmed pet owner in North Carolina. The dogs were found living in extremely unsanitary and hazardous conditions in the home, and it was clear that immediate intervention was necessary. They will receive ongoing medical and behavioral care at an ASPCA facility. During times like these, when we need to take immediate action for animals, support from people like you is critical. PLEASE MAKE AN URGENT GIFT today as we continue to give these animals, and so many others, the care they need. Donate now👉 aspca.org/NCdogrescue

The ASPCA joins NYPD officers for National Night Out! 👮🤝🐶 For over 40 years, National Night Out has aimed to strengthen ties and partnerships between the police and the local community. ASPCA staff and volunteers recently joined NYPD officers at nine different events across all five boroughs to celebrate National Night Out! We distributed informational flyers with valuable pet care tips, details about adoption and volunteering information at various precincts and Police Service Areas all over the city. We also focused on building meaningful connections with the attending community members, as well as local social service organizations. Community Engagement Coordinator, David Louridas, mentions, "Families were so grateful for the ASPCA's services, and some hold stories of how they have been literally lifesaving for their neighborhood." Celebrating Hurricane Helene's unsung heroes 🐶 When Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina last September, communities were absolutely devastated. The ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center (BRC), located just outside of Asheville, was among the affected. While 27 dogs from the BRC were safely evacuated to our shelter in Ohio after the storm, a handful were in foster homes during the worst of it. Every single foster caregiver treated their foster dog as if they were their own, evacuating and ensuring the safety of their foster and resident pets alike. One foster, Ann G., was unreachable even as phone service was restored. Dedicated and concerned staff mapped out a route to her home, dodged downed power lines and trees and were able to check in and deliver supplies for her and her foster pup, Catalina. Neighbors confirmed that the pair was safe and staying with friends, and the next day, Ann was able to reach the staff and relay that they were safe! Ann ended up adopting Catalina, emphasizing that she was their rock throughout this entire ordeal. This National #AnimalFosterAppreciationWeek, we couldn't be more grateful to these amazing individuals who weathered the worst storms with a furry foster by their side. 🧡 Read more foster stories who stepped up during a heartbreaking emergency here: https://bit.ly/4fMOXG7

Come experience foster life with Starfish and Bubbles! At five weeks old, these kittens were growing quickly and ready to explore their surroundings under careful supervision. A foster stepped up and happily welcomed them into their home and heart. Being a foster caregiver for shelter animals, especially kittens, is critical to our rescue mission. During summer's feline breeding season (AKA kitten season), shelters see thousands of vulnerable kittens who need around-the-clock care. When a foster opens their home for kittens like Starfish and Bubbles, we can free up resources and space for even more at-risk kittens. When you help one, you help many. That's #TheRescueEffect! We're incredibly grateful for our dedicated foster caregivers who make it possible to rescue even more kitties 🧡 Ready to foster? One dedicated foster volunteer helps this shy cat blossom 🌷🐱 Tulip was one of more than 200 animals seized from a nonprofit animal rescue organization in Los Angeles in October of 2022 and impounded at the LA County Department of Downey Animal Care and Control Center (DACC). The majority of the cats were under-socialized, shut down and in need of treatment for various medical conditions. Shelter staff noticed a decline in her behavior and continued to provide toys, treats, and more to enrich and lighten up her spirits. Once DACC was legally cleared to release the animals to rescue partners, we were able to safely place Tulip in foster care, where she could continue to heal. Lisa A. has fostered hundreds of cats for the ASPCA since 2017 and is no stranger to working with shy cats. She could sense Tulip had a loving heart despite her fear, so she set her up in a large bathroom where she could decompress. Once Tulip grew more comfortable with Lisa, she soon had more access to the rest of her home. She even became BFFS with Lisa's resident senior cats! Lisa cared for Tulip for 9 months, playing a crucial role in setting her up for success to find her new home. Although it was a tearful goodbye, Lisa knew Tulip had someone special out there who would love her like no other. Someone like Chris N., who found himself on the ASPCA's Los Angeles Feline Program's website, looking at who was available for adoption. Tulip caught his eye, and the ASPCA staff arranged a virtual meet and greet. Chris fell in love and adopted Tulip in July 2024. While Tulip did take some time to warm up, he gave her plenty of time and space to adjust at her own pace. Now, she wants all of his attention! Tulip no longer hides when guests come over, and often sits on Chris' desk while he's working to "help". Tulip's adoption enabled Lisa to bring home another animal in need of foster care, and when that animal moved into a foster home, it helped the shelter give another one a chance. Helping one helps many, which is what we call #TheRescueEffect. Visit the link below to read more about Tulip's story. 🧡 https://bit.ly/41LFSHw #ASPCA #HappyTail
