What does it take to design climate-responsive cities? Not just technology. Not just data. It takes clarity, collaboration and courage to innovate. We recently joined global industry leaders to explore how simulation can improve building performance at the Building Simulation Conference 2025 co-hosted by IBPSA Australasia and AIRAH. Aurecon’s Quentin Jackson, Nicki Parker and Jonathan Vogt joined nearly 600 global experts to explore how simulation and systems thinking can accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future. Here are five big ideas we’re bringing back: 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 As keynote speaker Associate Professor Jen Martin reminded us: even the most advanced models mean nothing if we can’t communicate their value. 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 Incremental gains won’t solve the climate challenge, grid decarbonisation and cross-disciplinary innovation are essential. 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 Building Performance Simulation is only as good as the assumptions behind it. AI can help, but critical thinking remains non-negotiable. 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝗽 Bridging the disconnect between academia and practice means teaching sense-making and parametric thinking, not just precise answers. 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 From the launch of the IBPSA Women’s Network to conversations on diversity and mentorship, it’s clear that people shape the future. The future of building simulation is collaborative, innovative and inclusive. #WhatDoesItTake #BuildingSimulation #BS2025
