Enjoyed contributing to this piece from The Washington Post on the growing challenges cities face from last-mile and on-demand delivery, and the successes cities are seeing by automating curb management. "About 50 percent of curb stops are seven minutes or less, vice president Matt Brooker said, whether it is dropping off a diner at a restaurant or picking up a take-out order. But cities rarely accommodate that transient traffic. Delivery companies and courier services, Brooker said, “are happy to pay for access to curb if it means they will have the curb available.” “Policies haven’t kept pace with the rise of e-commerce.” Big shoutout to Automotus's amazing partners mentioned in the article - Pittsburgh (David & Rylan), Philadelphia (Richard & Corinne) and Portland (Millicent & Jacob)! Thanks Rachel Weiner for helping shine a light on these critical issues. #curbmanagement #urbanplanning #smartcities https://wapo.st/4lqgHSC

A massive thank you to our partners at the Fort Lee Parking Authority— Evelyn Lassalle -Ayala, CPM and Hernani Goncalves, MAS, CPM — for hosting an awesome field trip yesterday for parking authorities and cities across New Jersey to dive into their Smart Loading Zone program. We had a lively discussion on the curb challenges Jersey cities face and looked at Fort Lee’s early results: 📈 44% increase in commercial vehicle use ⏱️ 22% reduction in dwell times 🔄 53% increase in curbside turnover 🚫 43% drop in double-parking Read the full case study here: https://lnkd.in/gSgQAun6 Matt Brooker Danny L.

Curb regulation is essential for maintaining safety and ensuring efficient traffic flow in urban areas. By clearly designating where vehicles can park, load, or stop, curb regulations reduce congestion, and prevent illegal or obstructive parking. Properly managed curbs help emergency vehicles and transit services operate smoothly, support local businesses with organized loading zones, and contribute to a safer, more predictable street environment for everyone. So proud of the work from Automotus, Rylan Seifert at DOMI, and all team at Pittsburgh Parking Authority that made this happen.

🚛 Smart Policy Is Driving Better Outcomes in Pittsburgh We’re proud to see the continued success of our partners in Pittsburgh–since the program’s inception in 2021, we’ve expanded from 20 smart loading zones initially to ~150 locations including SLZs, bike lanes, and no stopping zones, that are delivering results: 📉 95% reduction in double parking ⏱️ 60% decrease in average parking duration 🚗 Up to 4.5% improvement in traffic speeds in select areas These results underscore the potential of automated curb management to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and improve urban logistics. It’s a testament to what cities can achieve with the right policies, technologies and partnerships. The Department of Energy’s Annual Merit Review is a wrap! Over the past week, it has been uplifting to participate in the yearly gathering of multi-sectoral expertise and project collaborators focused on improving and increasing the efficiency and sustainability aspects of 🚗 ⚡ transportation technologies that will improve America’s energy efficiency and fuel economy. During this year’s conference, Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) traveled to DC to present both a poster session for its Technology Integration Project, focused on creating an investment plan for innovative charging station infrastructure solutions along the I-710 freeway critical freight arteries, and an oral presentation on its Energy Efficient Mobility Systems Project, focused on evaluating and testing curb management strategies to catalyze EV adoption. From the poster session, it was great to hear Jack Symington share more about the progress made to leverage existing goods movement real estate assets and secure test locations to provide more charging to support battery-electric truck 🔋 charging infrastructure. During my presentation, it was great to get questions about the curb management projects' modeling and policy tools' transferability to other cities, current partnerships for sharing learnings, baseline development for curb modeling, engagement with additional Clean Cities Coalitions, and collaboration with cities to evaluate the benefits and challenges of using ALPR to accelerate EV adoption. While both of these projects are coming to an end later this year, LACI’s work related to Last Mile Delivery and Zero Emission people and good movement work will continue through our #TransportationElectrificationPartnership Efforts and those happening in the cohort of cities across the country participating in the City Climate Innovation Challenge. Looking forward to finishing strong with my project team! 🙌 #AMR2025 #DOEVTO Kaia R., Michelle Kinman, Matt Petersen Curbs Team - National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Southern California, Southern California Association of Governments, Automotus Trucks Team - Gateway Cities Council of Governments, University of California, Riverside, City of Los Angeles
