The downward revisions to US jobs figures are in the news, with August 1 announcements turning good news to bad news. Our Macro Trends Group called out something in their early June note that deserves more attention. If you remove the modeled contribution of business births and deaths, which we believe is overstating headline payroll growth, nonfarm payrolls grew by just 18K in May. June’s true figure likely hovered around 15K. And while July’s reported gain was 73K, our team estimates the real number may have been closer to a 75K decline. Recent revisions are catching up to this reality. The data may not be fully contractionary, but it’s consistent with a weakening labor market and a more fragile economy than the headlines suggest.
