I’m impressed! I’m impressed with our team for releasing “AI Storage Consumption Forecasting” to our customers this week. Like many software companies we wrestle with the best way to bring AI to our customers and products. It is easy to get caught up in the enthusiasm for new technologies and adopt technology ‘for it’s own sake’. I have long been a student of “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. I could write a whole blog just on that but here’s the relevant part for Bocada: “Pause-Think-Crawl-Walk-Run” – understand how AI fits into your strategy and gradually scale up use. AI Storage Consumption Forecasting is our 4th new AI powered monitoring tool this year adding to things like “AI Missed Backups” and “AI Anomaly Detection”. Storage is a huge cost for customers and being able to predict consumption is a great use case for AI. Kudos to the team for identifying this perfect application for AI and building something relevant and useful for our customers. Two years ago, OceanGate's Titan submersible imploded during a dive to the Titanic wreckage, killing all five people aboard and spurring widespread public speculation about what went wrong. 📢 A report released yesterday by The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation has revealed that OceanGate possessed ample acoustic sensor data indicating delamination in the carbon fiber hull, and a former director of marine operations had detailed dozens of issues in an internal report. But the warnings were never acted upon - neither used internally to implement fixes/replacements nor raised to regulators. Collecting the right data and producing the right reports doesn't achieve anything on its own. ACTION IS REQUIRED. It’s a powerful parallel to what we see in IT and cyber resilience, particularly in the backup & recovery function. Many IT teams have backup reports for tracking job successes and failures. But without automated incident ticket creation and automated remediation, many of those failures accumulate unresolved -- until a ransomware attack gets through and systems cannot be recovered. At Bocada, we go beyond visibility and "rubberstamping". Our data protection monitoring platform ensures failed backups don’t just get logged -- they get acted on. Because when disaster strikes, the difference between data loss and data recovery is whether you did the right thing when the warnings came in. #TitanSub #DataProtection #BackupMonitoring #ITOperations #IncidentManagement #Bocada #Compliance #Automation #Ransomware

“You can’t manage what you don’t measure.” Generally attributed to Peter Drucker, this is one of my favorite business quotes. Amazingly, in 2025 there are still lots of things that companies cannot – or do not – measure. For cybersecurity and cyber resilience teams – which includes IT operations, storage and backup teams – the measuring and managing challenges keep growing. These teams are being asked to reduce costs (or at least hold them flat) while simultaneously improving their security posture as systems complexity grows. This is the third in a three-part post about measuring Cost, Coverage & Compliance in cyber resilience. Part 3: Measuring Compliance in Cyber Resiliency When I first got involved with Bocada, I heard that our product was used for compliance reporting. My first question was: “Compliance with what?” (Note: I have come to understand ‘compliance’ as a word used by enterprises and ‘SLAs’ or service level agreements as a term used by managed services providers. We use them interchangeably at Bocada because enterprises typically set or negotiate SLAs with their MSPs to meet their compliance requirements.) I didn’t get a direct answer to my seemingly simple question, perhaps for a good reason. There are MANY different compliance standards, and nearly all of them have clauses that mandate specific data protection practices. In addition to company-established or internal policies that require proof of data protection compliance, there is also regulatory compliance frameworks such as PCI, FINRA, HIPAA, GDPR, SOC2, FFIEC and ISO 27001… just to name a few! All of the aforementioned compliance frameworks require companies to protect data (i.e., have backups), with penalties and business consequences for non-compliance that can be devastating for your business. Who measures compliance with these data protection obligations? Typically, an annual audit forces some level of measurement – but what happens if that audit fails? A failed audit can leave an organization with many more unanswered questions and a seemingly impossible gap to overcome in a limited amount of time (before external auditors become aware of the issues). This is why Bocada provides daily, weekly, and monthly automated measures of compliance. We work with our customers to establish compliance standards, configure reporting, and automate the creation and distribution of compliance evidence reports. It’s hard to keep track of every compliance rule, but with Bocada continually measuring performance against established standards and automatically distributing specialized evidence reports, you really don’t have to. #DataCompliance #SOC2 #ISO27001 #Bocada #Vanta #Drata #SecureFrame #EY #Capgemini #PCI #FINRA #HIPAA #GDPR #FFIEC

For cybersecurity and cyber resilience teams – which includes IT operations, storage and backup teams – the measuring and managing challenges keep growing. These teams are being asked to reduce costs (or at least hold them flat) while simultaneously improving their security posture as systems complexity grows. This is the second in a three-part post about measuring Cost, Coverage & Compliance in cyber resilience. Part 2: Measuring Cyber Resilience Coverage There are loads of great backup applications on the market. In 2024, Gartner listed 74 products in their “enterprise backup and recovery software solutions” category. These include great products from great companies such as Veeam Software, Rubrik, Cohesity, and Commvault; native cloud backup capabilities from Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS); and also products from industry stalwarts Oracle, IBM, and Dell Technologies. Every one of these applications should be able to tell you if you have a recoverable backup for the assets they know about. As long as your storage and backup teams know a resource exists – AND has added that resource to a backup policy – you should be covered! However – how do you know you’re accounting for all the resources in your environment? If you are a compliance officer, a CISO or a C-level enterprise leader, you might ask your storage and backup team to provide a weekly reconciliation of existing assets in your estate and what is protected. This critical use case – which Bocada automates for our customers – is why Bocada is the most comprehensive asset validation tool on the market. We don’t require our customers to have a clean and consolidated CMDB. Our product is designed to bring order to complex environments. We ingest asset inventories from a broad range of sources – CMDBs, virtualizers, cloud repositories, even spreadsheets – and regularly compare these against every asset with a backup attempt across the estate. Regardless of workload or backup type, this is a true measure of an enterprise’s resilience – a regular and comprehensive view of what is protected. And Bocada is the only enterprise monitoring tool that provides it. #cyberresilience #backupmonitoring #CISO #CTO #ITMonitoring

This is the first in a three-part post about measuring Cost, Coverage & Compliance in cyber resilience. Part 1: Cloud Storage Costs Some of the things that go unmeasured are things that do not matter to the performance of a business. But businesses evolve: they pivot, they grow, and they experience business cycles. Right now, it feels like we are in a ‘business cycle' in which costs – that have been largely allowed to grow unchecked for years – are now important to ‘measure’ in order to manage (downward). One area Bocada’s customers are paying more attention to is cloud storage costs. Anyone who has tried to parse an Azure or AWS billing report knows that they can be cryptic. “What is that charge for? How can I reduce it? Which department or cost center should we charge it to? Do the teams generating the costs know how much they are spending?” This is why Bocada built Cloud Storage Cost reporting. Cloud invoicing is nearly impossible to understand, but our development team has poured over the data and APIs to simplify and normalize cloud storage costs into easy-to-use reports and data visualizations. This allows our customers to attribute cost data to specific cloud services, cost centers, cloud accounts, clients/resources, and any tagging system in use. With this new level of transparency comes better decision-making and easier cost management. We are in a new era where cost matters. Bocada has partnered with our customers and the leading cloud providers to provide clear measurement of these costs; now they can be managed! #AWS #Azure #Google #backupmonitoring #cloudstorage
